Advanced Course in Electric Vehicle Design Engineering
Mechatronics Revolution
1. MECHATRONICS REVOLUTION:
THE NEED FOR VOCATIONAL APPROACH
Presented by:
OLADIGBO, OLAYINKA E.
During a Technical Session organized by
Nigerian Society of Engineers, Ilesa Branch.
on the 31st of August, 2016.
Instructor, Bola Ige Mechatronics Institute
2. WHAT IS MECHATRONICS?
Mechatronics is a synergistic combination of
precision engineering, electronic control and
mechanical systems. It is the science that exists
at the interface between the other
five disciplines:
Mechanics Electronics Informatics
Automation Robotics
3. APPLICATIONS OF MECHATRONICS
Defense Industry Robots Medical Applications
Aeronautical Engineering Intelligent Measuring Devices
Home Appliances Automotive Control Systems
Industrial Automation Building Automation
4. MECHATRONICS IN NIGERIA
Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi
The entrance of Mechatronics education into Nigeria
educational system can be dated back to the year 2010.
Of which there has since been an appreciable level of
acceptance. Some of the higher institutions that
currently run the programme are:
Federal University, Oye Ekiti.
Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti.
Bells University of Technology, Ota.
The Polytechnic, Ibadan.
Osun State College of Technology, Esa-oke.
Federal Polytechnic, Nekede.
5. WHY VOCATIONAL TRAINING?
Mechatronics Engineering being a multi-disciplinary
course has a very wide potential. And so an effective way to
get the knowledge rightly imparted is to break it down
into vocational fragments. Nigeria being more of end user
nation is in dire need of intensive exploration of the
developed technology. Some of our breakthrough so far
as a nation were achieved through this means of tracing
back the rudiment from existing finished product.
Mobile Phone and Computer Assembling, and many

and many others are some examples. Acquiring
the vocational skills needed for the maintenance
and repairs of some of the developed product will go a
long way to challenge our initiative of developing our own
technology.
7. A PROXIMATE CASE STUDY (BIMI)
BOLA IGE MECHATRONICS INSTITUTE is an automotive
specialist Institute. The institute serves as a training ground
on modern day automobile repairs and services. We proudly
boast of the latest state-of-the-art equipment and tools.
8. A PROXIMATE CASE STUDY (BIMI)
Multimedia Laboratory for teaching
the rudiments and principle behind
various automotive components.
Car-train Laboratory containing real
live components and equipment as
obtainable in working cars.
9. A PROXIMATE CASE STUDY (BIMI)
Braking System Training Board for
teaching the functionality of ABS,
BA, TCS and ESP.
Engine Management Training Board
to demonstrate the arrangement and
operation of sensors, actuators & ECM.
10. A PROXIMATE CASE STUDY (BIMI)
Auto-electrical Training set-up for
the teaching of vehicle Inter
-connecting networks & bus system.
