EIB’s Climate Action Commitment - General
OECD - DG ENV - Water Investment Planning & Financing Workshop
“As the largest multilateral provider of climate finance worldwide, we
commit at least 25% of our lending portfolio to low-carbon and
climate-resilient growth.” (2016)
“The EIB will increase its level of support to climate action and
environmental sustainability to exceed 50% of its overall lending
activity by 2025.” (EIB Group Climate Bank Roadmap 2020-2025)
We want to
demonstrate the
climate impact
(adaptation and/or
mitigation) of all
our projects!
In 2020 EIB’s climate
financing totalled EUR 24.2
Billon (37% of total lending).

Case Study: EOS Project, Vienna WWTP
The EOS project is part of a larger
operation with EBS, Vienna’s
wastewater utility:
• The EOS Project: new sludge
digestion system to use biogas as a
renewable energy source to produce
energy through a Combined Heat
and Power plant.
• Three storm water retention basins:
Simmering (34,500m³), Gelbe Haide
(7,000m³), and Blumental (20,000m³)
• Renovation and upgrading works at
the wastewater treatment plant (grit
removal, etc.) dating from 1980

5. Results
• Project completed on budget and on
time (slight delay only due to COVID
crisis and challenging works under
operation)
• Vienna’s central WWTP becomes a net
energy producer (total production of
electricity and heat of 160 GWh/year vs.
total needs of 103 GWh/year)
• Annual savings of 40,000 tons of CO2
