1. Finally! Windows Azure Mobile Services Available
for Android
Finally today, Microsoft has added support for Android
applications to Windows Azure Mobile services that allow
users to connect their applications to Azure Mobile
Services and make use of this platform to store their
planned and structured data and add authentication and
push notifications features. A cloud backend for mobile
applications, Azure Mobile services has been launched by
Microsoft last year when it only supported Windows 8.
After short period of time, the team has added iOS as well
as Windows Phone 8 support for users. Now android users
are also able to use its user authentication tools and send
out push notifications without any hassle.
On GitHub, developers can find Android SDK that helps
them in many different ways. Along with Android SDK, the company also released
number of written tutorials to help you to get started. At the time of initial
announcement of public preview of Windows Azure Mobile Services, Scott Guthrie
said, “we would deliver first-class support for developers building Windows Store,
Windows Phone 8, iOS and Android apps. We launched in August with Windows
Store support and added iOS and Windows Phone 8 client libraries shortly
thereafter.”
2. In his recent notes, he said, “The team welcomes community contributions. The SDK
was actually developed by the Microsoft Open Technologies team, while the Azure
team focused on the push support and the portal integration. To enable push
notification to Android apps, developers still have to sign up for Google’s Cloud
Messaging service.”
Now all those developers, who are working with Android 2.2 and above can easily
plug into Ballmer's big blue cloud. We all know that before, Azure mobile services
are only supported with Windows Phone8, iOS and Windows 8.
But with this announcement, all the android users are feeling relax as its SDK also
allow them to connect with their favorite Android phone or tablet (Android 2.2+) to a
cloud backend and deliver push notifications through Google Cloud Messaging. It
also enables authenticate your users through their Twitter, Google, Facebook or
Microsoft credentials.
With the support for Android apps, the company also expands Mobile service’s reach
to the East Asia Region. Speaking on this updated, the company said “reduce latency
for applications with customers in Asia.” The latest announcement also brings the
Azure Store that offers developers the capability to add Microsoft and third-party
add-ons to their Azure apps in 22 different countries.
