Besides Energy Drinks?
Are consumers tired of energy drinks? According to global analysts Mintel, the number of
consumers taking energy drinks/shots has remained at a flat 15 percent between 2007 and 2009.
It may be time for supplement manufacturers to develop more energy drink products, containing
less caffeine, less sugar and more nutrition and flavor—energy products that would suit the needs
of a wider audience.
Energy drinks are consumed mostly for their stimulant effect produced by a caffeine content
which could range from 50 to 505 mg per can or bottle. Up until now, energy drink companies
have been producing products with alluring names such as “Full Throttle” and “Rockstar”, mainly
targeting young males. Promotional campaigns sponsoring campus concerts and parties have
made energy drinks a national craze among students. But, according to global analysts Mintel,
beyond the youth category, energy drink manufacturers are having a tough time attracting new
customers.
Data from the Mintel Global Market Navigator (GMN) reveals just why energy drinks may have
lost their drive. Amongst non-users of energy drinks, 48 percent find them too expensive, 43
percent say they have too much caffeine, and 43 percent believe that energy drinks/shots are just
not good for their health. According to the same survey, approximately 16 percent of people
surveyed said they would be willing to try free samples of a new energy product. Many of these
said they would prefer energy drinks with natural ingredients.
Supplement Manufacturers Can Fill Unmet Consumer Needs
As Americans grow more health-conscious, energy products that give a healthy boost of energy
along with nutritional health benefits are attracting more attention.
In order to gain more market share, manufacturers may want to consider turning their advertising
efforts to target older consumers. A consumer research study by Mintel revealed that men and
women over the age of 55 are more active and one-third of them would consider purchasing an
energy or cereal bar.
Ingredients for Nutritional Energy Products
The concept of an energy drink is popular as people continue to look for more and more ways to
keep up with their hectic lifestyles. Energy products are typically manufactured in the form of
energy drinks as this is the most convenient form of delivery. It also offers quick bio-availability of
nutrients.
A healthy formula may include:
Quercetin, a flavonoid found in the skin of fruits such as blueberries and apples. Concentrated
forms of quercetin promote sustained energy levels. It is an antioxidant that has anti-inflammatory
properties and promotes sustained energy levels.1-2
Green tea is rich in antioxidants, particularly EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), which is supported
by a growing body of scientific research for promoting heart health, immune health and also
known to help “burn calories”.3 Green tea does have a caffeine content but it is about 12 percent
of the caffeine content found in energy drinks such as “Red Bull”.
Co-enzyme Q10. This vitamin-like substance is found in the mitochondria of every cell and is
required in the production of cellular energy.4
3. Ginseng has been used for 2,000 years in Chinese medicine for promoting health, vitality and
energy.5
Guaraná contains a level of caffeine that is four times greater than that of coffee, with stimulating
effects that longer lasting. It is one of the most popular natural ingredients in energy drinks
because of its high caffeine content. It is also believed to stave off hunger.6
Rhodiola rosea is an herb found mainly in Siberia. It is an antioxidant believed to have
adaptogenic properties. Some studies show that it relieves mental fatigue and may support
cognitive functions.7
B-vitamins can be included in energy drinks to enhance nutritional value. They are known to play
a role in energy production.8
D-ribose is a natural sugar that is known to enhance energy levels and promote heart functions.
Only half as sweet as sucrose, D-ribose also helps to regulate healthy blood sugar levels.9-10
