• Focus on running your business Applications. The Cisco Intent-based DC will Learn,
Adapt and Protect your business Applications.
• Acquire Cisco 30+ years of networking expertise with Cisco Network Assurance Engine
that continuously analyze across your entire DC network to prevent 5000+ DC network
failure scenarios.
• Use Cisco HyperFlex as the new foundation for your Multi-Cloud DC. You are the Real
Hero for the business.
• Secure your DC with Cisco Tetration Platform which recommends Application
Segmentation Policies thru learning every apps and network that goes thru your DC.
• Let machines help you manage machines with Cisco Workload Optimization Manager.
• Accelerate Cloud Projects with Cisco Cloud Center.
With Cisco Data Center (DC)Technology …
You monitor a certain number of utilization metrics for different resources (CPU, Memory, Storage, IO, etc.) related to each data center entity (host, data stores, VMs, etc.). You use these metrics to make resource allocation decisions.
Let’s walk through a simplified representation of your environment (we know you have more than hosts, data stores, and VMs in your environment).
(Get the customer to provide/estimate the numbers)
Example: 4 metrics monitored for 10 hosts + 3 metrics monitored for 10 data stores + 3 metrics monitored for 100 VMs = 370 data points to monitor.
This is way too complex, so you do what IT has always done – over-provision to minimize the risks to performance.
In fact, determining the right combination of allocated resources such that performance is assured, while maximizing efficiency across all entities is an n-dimensional problem—there are simply too many combinations of resource states to consider.
Moreover, given the shared environment every change potentially impacts other entities in the environment. How do you account for these relationships?
Hint: Applying economic principles to the data center stack allows real-time resource decisions to be made that take into consideration the relationships between entities and the impact that changes to one workload have on every other workload.
Workload Optimization Manager does not provision or manage anything. It is a real-time analytics and decision engine that has been designed to continuously scale resources up or down in response to changes in workload demand before degradation occurs.
Note to presenter: this is a key message. Today’s performance monitoring tools only alert operations after performance has degraded. Workload Optimization Manager is designed to achieve and maintain equilibrium between application demand and infrastructure supply to ensure maximum performance.
The solution assures workload performance and efficiency by instantly delivering or decommissioning the right amount of infrastructure, at the right time, in the right place.
Built into Workload Optimization are templates that allow customers to modeling for hardware refreshes or migration workloads to another location within the data center.
To complete this modeling capability, Workload Optimization will first take a snapshot of the current environment, then determine the affect of migrating or refreshing hardware.
In this particular example above, the objective of this report was to determine the affect of a new business initiative on the environment. The report shows that the environment needs to increase active hosts from 20 to 24. Increase active storage devices from 5 to 8. It also shows the utilization of their environment across a defined set of parameters today (left) compared to utilization when hosts and storage devices are increased.
Note: also available are hardware refresh templates that allow you to determine what is needed when the customer wants to migrate from an older UCS model to M4 or M5.
Built into Workload Optimization are templates that defined all UCS models making it easy to complete these reports.
Presenter Note: This modeling uses the same process of taking a snapshot of the current environment and then applying the movement of service entities into the public cloud.
Migration/What if Modeling:
Customers can understand the cost of migrating public workloads into the public cloud. (AWS, Azure are supported today, Google by the end of calendar 2017).
Why is this important?
On premise the infrastructure is a sunk cost. Workload Optimization is ensuring that resources are “right sized” without overprovisioning, and are located in the right place to ensure cost efficient optimization of resources ensuring maximum performance and cost efficiency. It also eliminates orphaned resources sitting idle.
The moment that workloads are moved into the public cloud, costs translate from capital to operating expense. History shows that on premise workloads are typically over provisioned to accommodate workload peak demand. When workloads are moved to the cloud, history also shows that people choose the next largest instance type to have the same allocation. In essence, they have 2-4X over allocated infrastructure. The result is a larger cloud bill than you expected.
Built into Workload Optimization is a template that allows customers to estimate the cost of their cloud bill and assures that workloads placed into the cloud are right sized to the best fit template and lowest cost region. NOTE: This is not a one and done decision. Just as workloads on premise need to be continuously monitored, so do workloads in the cloud.
This capabilities delivers significant value as customers do not want different tools for their on premise and public cloud workloads. Workload Optimization manages the complexity of optimizing on premise and public cloud through a single user interface.
What’s needed is an approach that puts the interests and requirements of your organization and your hybrid cloud first, before those of any single public cloud provider or cloud technology.
In other words, a cloud neutral approach.
An approach that recognizes the fact that the network connects everything, no matter the location type, device type, or even cloud type; and is able to make that fact work to their advantage.
An approach that delivers an application strategy that places your business requirements (like security, speed, performance, and cost, for example) first in determining how to manage their applications, instead of the application type, where it lives, or whose connection it may be traveling on.
CloudCenter is unique in the industry
CloudCenter abstracts the cloud. Assumes clouds are and will continue to all be different (APIs)
Application-centric approach.
You Model application profile once – then can deploy and manage anywhere.
One profile – combines application and infrastructure automation directives
And eliminates environment-specific automation that locks workloads into a single environment
Supports composite topologies – including OS images, containers, application and cloud services, and leverages investments Chef, Puppet, Salt
Graphical modeler – makes it easy to create a deployable Application Profile that is portable to any environment
No environment specific scripting, programming, or modifying the application code
