PHYSICAL EDUCATION
COMPILED BY NTOKOZO MHLAMBI, 220029506
WHAT IS PHYSICAL EDUCATION?
 Back then it was described as education of the physical meaning learners used to drill and stretch.
 but now it is described as education through physical activities as it refers to education through
‘movements’- move to learn/ learn to move.
 “it is a planned, sequential instruction that promotes lifelong physical activity. It is designed to develop
basic movement skills, sports skills and physical fitness; as well as to enhance mental, social and
emotional abilities” (Jude, 2020).
 Physical education is a technique of education to aid the holistic development of a learner through
motor skills and fitness (Elias&Cairo, 2015) .
 We can say it is the ART OF POSITIVE LIVING !
IMPORTANCE OF P.E. IN SCHOOLS (Lee-
Shann,2015)
 Physical activities are compulsory for human
growth and development as they allow
proper growth of organs.
 P.E develops learner’s social qualities as well
as their mental abilities.
 P.E helps learners utilise their leisure time by
using a variety of physical activities.
 P.E develops learner’s physical endurance,
coordination, strength and body control for
optimum body functioning.
BENEFITS OF PHYSICAL
EDUCATION (Inso, 2014)
• Exercises helps boost energy and improves the mood.
• Exercise controls weight and help to combat health conditions
such as obesity and depression.
• Exercise is consistently proven to drastically reduce anxiety and
stress caused by overwhelming classroom demands (Hawxhurst,
2018).
• Physical activities aid in improving sleep quality as exercises
naturally wear off the body and reduce sleep disorders.
• Physical activities improve the self-esteem of an individual-
learners learn new skills in a safe environment which boosts their
self-image.
• P.E improves learner’s mobility, flexibility and muscle endurance,
it helps them become active and fit.
• P.E. helps learners to determine their hidden talents through
participation, they discover which physical activity they enjoy the
most.
Fundamental
movement skills:
• Jumping
• Skipping
• Running
• Kicking
• Throwing
• Catching
• Walking
• Balancing
Examples of
physical activities
 Include indigenous games, e.g. tug of war,
hopscotch, dibeke, soccer etc. these improve
learners social skills.
 Cardiovascular (aerobic) exercises which
improve learners cardiorespiratory endurance.
 Strengthening exercises, good for muscular
endurance and strength. May include doing
squads, lifting weighs and fitness circuit.
 Doing house chores is also a physical activity
as part of your body is moving, lifting or
walking.
VERY IMPORTANT IN EVERY P.E. CLASS!
P.E. CLOTHES
• Choose loose comfortable
clothing for maximum stretching
and confidence.
• A jean or skirt is certainly
uncomfortable
• You may wear cycling shorts,
tight moisture-wicking leggings
and vests/ t-shirt.
• Correct clothing allows for
maximum participation from all
learners.
WARM-UP
• Increases overall body and
muscle temperatures which
increase blood flow to the active
muscles.
• Exercising without warming up
places a potentially dangerous
stress on the heart.
• You may do dynamic stretches
like high knees, butt kicks, jog on
spot or frog jumps.
COOL DOWN
• Reduce heart and breathing rates
thus gradually cool body
temperature.
• Cool down should also be
followed with replacing lost
fluids during exercises.
• You can do static stretches like
standing quad stretch, hamstring
stretch, child-pose and upper
body stretch.
