New Entrepreneurs
Networking Basics for New Entrepreneurs
• Nurture relationships not business cards
• Attend networking events regularly
• Add value to the conversations
• Focus on the why
• Practice a firm handshake
• Follow up
Nurture relationships not business cards
Networking is about building relationships. Show a genuine interest in other
people and their business. Add value to the conversation and they will
reciprocate the favor. When appropriate, exchange business cards. I assure
you, if you add value to the conversation, the person talking to you will ask
you for your card.
Attend networking events regularly
Familiarize yourself with the professional community, especially with other
people in your industry. You can find networking events on Facebook,
Eventbrite, and MeetUp. You want the professional community to be familiar
with your brand. I recommend attending at least 2-3 networking events a
month.
Add value to the conversations
Participate in the conversations by adding value to the topic at hand. Focus
on other people and be genuine in your approach. Adding value to the
conversation will leave a positive impression to the people participating in the
conversation.
Focus on the why
When it is your turn to speak during a conversation, focus on the why of your
business. The why of your business is what people will remember the most
and will trigger a more engaging conversation. This will also give them insight
into what type of person you are and help you create buy-in.
Practice a firm handshake
It is all about leaving a great first impression. A firm handshake is the best
start to a successful conversation. Be firm, but not aggressive. Also avoid
having a floppy wrist or a “princess” handshake. Be careful not to overthink
this, but it is important to do it well.
Follow up
Take the time to follow up with the people you meet at the networking event
over the next 2-3 days. This step is crucial in continuing that relationship after
the event. Even if it is only a simple message, follow up with your contacts.
Networking is the foundation of your business.
