Uttar Pradesh is a state in northern India.
It was created on 1 April 1937 as the United Provinces during British rule, and was
renamed Uttar Pradesh in 1950.
The two major rivers of the state, the Ganges and Yamuna, join at Allahabad and then
flow as the Ganges further east.
Hindi is the most widely spoken language and is also the official language of the state.
The state is bordered by Rajasthan to the west, Haryana, Himachal

5. GOVERNMENT AND ADMINISTRATION
Uttar Pradesh is one of the seven states in India, where the state legislature is
bicameral, comprising two houses: the Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) and
the Vidhan Parishad (Legislative Council).
The Legislative Assembly consists of 404 members who are elected for five-year
terms.
The state contributes 80 seats to the lower house of the Indian Parliament, Lok
Sabha and 31 seats to the upper house of the Indian Parliament, Rajya Sabha.
For purpose of administration, the state is divided into 18 divisions and 75
districts. Divisional Commissioner, an IAS officer is the head of administration on the
divisional level.

Traditional sports, now played mostly as a pastime, include wrestling, swimming, kabaddi, and
track-sports or water-sports played according to local traditional rules and without modern
equipment.
Recently, cricket has become more popular than field hockey.

final.
