Sunderland Royal Hospital. The Acute Stroke Unit (Ward E58) is a 36 bedded
facility with a dedicated therapy suite. The unit provides facilities for patients
who have suffered a stroke with dedicated and trained stroke nurses and
therapy staff, who provide care and therapy within the ward area.
The Stroke Team has collaborated with colleagues both internally and
externally from across South of Tyne to develop a new model for stroke care
3. which delivers a high quality, safe and effective service including a 24/7
thrombolysis service. The implementation of new ways of working has
ensured the Stroke Strategy standards have been achieved and there has
been a massive improvement in terms of the vast majority of stroke patients
now receiving their care on the Acute Stroke Unit by dedicated stroke
specialists.
The team works closely with members of The Stroke Association to ensure an
individual’s needs continue to be met following discharge from the service.
In addition there is a very successful Community Stroke Rehabilitation Team
which has received national recognition from the Stroke Association for being
the ‘most improved Community Stroke Team in the country’. The team has
made huge strides in supporting stroke survivors in the community.

E52 Sunderland Royal Hospital The Care of the Elderly Department provides
care to patients over the age of 65 both in an in-patient and out-patient
setting. The Department provides general nursing care as well as specialist
care for heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), stroke
Care, end of life care and falls.
They work closely with Social Services and community services to ensure
safe discharge of patients from hospital either to their own home or into
nursing or residential care.
They also work closely with the mental health Trust and have a liaison service
for those patients with mental health problems in old age, in a general care
setting.

5. MANAGERIAL EXPERIENCE
