We put together a list of the
questions we get asked most
frequently about memory foam
2. F.A.Q
1. Isn’t memory foam too soft?
2. How can I stop the memory foam from being
too hot?
3. Doesn’t memory foam have a bad smell?
4. How important is the depth of the top layer
of memory foam?
3. 1. Isn’t memory foam too soft?
Many people worry that memory foam is going to be too
soft since they know that the body sinks into it.
• It’s true that you sink into the foam but it won’t
happen in a way that will leave you feeling that the
mattress is too soft.
• Memory foam mattresses are manufactured with a
wide range of firmness. A combination of the density
of the memory foam, and especially the density of the
reflex foam that comprises the base layers determine
how firm the mattress will be.
4. Our Advice
• If your are looking for a firmer mattress then
it is advisable to choose one which uses
denser foam in the base layer.
• Conversely, if you prefer a softer
mattress, choose one with less dense foam in
the base.
5. 2. How can I stop the memory foam
from being too hot?
Since memory foam uses the warmth from your body
to mould to your body shape, it can hold on to a lot
of this heat which might be pretty uncomfortable
during the summer.
• To combat this issue most mattress manufacturers
have started putting a cooling cover over their
memory foam mattresses. They are filled with tiny
pores that absorb excess moisture. This is stored
in the cooling cover until you get too hot. It then
evaporates and cools you in the same way your
body does by sweating.
6. Our Advice
• When trying to decide which memory foam
mattress to buy, you should always make sure
one of these covers is included; they do a lot
to keep you as comfortable as possible.
• Mattress manufacturers have a range of
names for those covers, (Coolmax , Outlast ,
and Coolsport to mention a few) but they all
serve the same function.
7. 3. Doesn’t memory foam have a bad
smell?
• When you open your memory foam mattress
for the first time you will notice a slight
industrial smell.
• This smell is not permanent. It will take a
couple weeks, but it will always fade away.
There are some ways you can speed up the
process. If you have space, airing the mattress
outside is a good idea.
8. Our Advice
• We advise airing the mattress outside as well
as hanging on to your old mattress so you
aren’t left without anything to sleep on while
you let the mattress air out if you want to wait
for the smell to be a little less strong before
you lay your head on it.
9. 4. How important is the depth of the
top layer of memory foam?
• Most of the benefits of memory foam come from
the way your body sinks into the mattress, so the
depth of the top layer is very important. To get
the most out of this function, it is important to
make sure the top layer is thick enough to
support your weight effectively.
• For children, a thinner layer between 20mm and
30mm will suit. Most adults will need a top layer
of somewhere between 50mm and 100mm,
depending on how much you weigh.
10. Our Advice
• This might have you wondering if you need
more when you’re sharing the bed with a
partner?
• Since the foam supports your bodies
individually, just make sure you have enough
foam for your heavier half to be comfortable
and you’ll both be happy.
