I'm on a mission to help executives improve their online presence and thought leadership. These are slides from my workshop at the Connecticut Association of Healthcare Executives Women's Forum. @pdxnicolle
5. “Approximately one-third of consumers are using
today’s social space as a “natural habitat” for
health discussions and 42% of consumers have
used social media to access health-related
consumer reviews (e.g. of treatments or
physicians).
◇ Social Media “Likes” Healthcare, PWC
6. “With the positive aspects of being a social CEO
routinely splashed across the business pages,
social fluency will likely be on almost every
board’s list of must-have leadership skills.
Already, given a choice between similarly strong
candidates — one with an impressive social
presence, the other without – the choice is easy:
boards increasingly prefer the modern leader.

executive productivity tool, a global broadcast
channel, a source of consumer and competitor
intel, and a PR vehicle.

How many of you are on LinkedIn?
Use LinkedIn for more than just a profile?
Twitter?
THERE ARE SO MANY TOOLS AND i DON’T HAVE TIME TO GO INTO THEM ALL. So I’m only focusing on two today: LinkedIn and Twitter.
It would take me all day to talk about Facebook - especially with their live stream potential. YouTube is another beast with incredible potential

Engagement is the buzzword that powers social media - your marketing team loves this word! I know I used to be the social media person in marketing! These platforms revolutionized online communications because of the two way nature. Consumers can talk directly to companies, brands can reach consumers easier. Everyone is reachable.
Networking piece.
It makes you feel good. It makes you check in on a person and wonder “What’s she doing?”
I said this wasn’t about likes but I lied a bit - this is where “likes’ come in, specifically on engagement with your network. Everyone is sharing content. Liking and commenting on what your network says or does is a way of saying “Hey, that’s smart, I like that.” It makes people feel good. But there’s an added benefit. If I like something on LinkedIn that’s smart and forward thinking, the rest of my network will see it too. And that associates my name with forward thinking content and trends. And that’s powerful. Of course, you need to have read the content to begin with. You can also comment on it to. If you agree or disagree, say so! Ask a question. Be visible. You never know who is looking. These are engagement tools.
EXAMPLE ON LINKEDIN of engagement. Old school rolodex meet new school rolodex.
How many of you have gone through yoru LinkedIn list of connections and seen what people are up to? Where are former colleagues working now? What could you learn from them? Maybe you should drop them a note to inquire what they’re up to? It’s a great way to get insider information on an industry that you’re curious about. Or if yo’re launching a new product, you could test out ideas on your frieds in teh industry.
When’s the last time you went through your LinkedIn connections and seen where they are at? Old coworkers, new colleagues, friends… Where are they now and what are they doing? You might be surprised.
Staying connected to people after a conference. Twitter makes meeting people at conferences so much easier. If you don’t use Twitter you are missing an opportunity to connect directly with people who share your interests. I meet people all the time on Twitter http://www.symplur.com/healthcare-hashtags/conferences/

Remember with the building blogs. Visibility, Discovery (helps you learn the tools), Engagement (you’ll be more likely to engage once you are familiar with the tools) Production (you’ll be more likely to produce when you have engaged and know your audience)
