February District Report
Good evening President Davis, Members of the Board, Superintendent Franklin, District
Staff, and members of the audience. It is my pleasure tonight to present the Patriotic activities for
the month of February.
To honor both Abraham Lincoln and George Washington’s Birthday, Tustin Unified
Schools received this Monday off, and also the upcoming Monday.
In honor of these noble men’s birthdays, students throughout the month will be
recognizing them and those in our nation, both past and present, whom have contributed to make
America what it is today. Schools are holding special flag raising ceremonies in which students
participate and sing patriotic anthems, and students are encouraged to wear the colors of our flag.
Many other elementary schools are contributing to the patriotic activity by incorporating
technology into their lessons in the classroom in order to learn more about our presidents and our
country. In addition, schools have asked students to write certain patriotic essays, such as “Why I
Love My Country.”
At Pioneer Middle School, The Peer Assistance Leadership (PAL) class has the whole
school involved in their patriotic acts of kindness. The Operation Barracks in a Box project was
led by students Hailey Figueroa and Julie Chun, helping house 36 homeless veterans. Pioneer
also participated in writing letters to soldiers. Hundreds of letters were written by all grades, and
at the end of the campaign select students from PAL will have the honor to visit Camp Pendleton
and deliver the letters personally to our soldiers.
Each year, Tustin Ranch Elementary celebrates Memorial Day with a schoolwide
community ceremony that includes current and former military, guest speakers, city officials,
and school district representatives. Students write poems about America, Freedom, and their
appreciation for our service men and women. The Theatre Arts Program plays patriotic songs
also. The best part for the students is when the veteran’s and active duty soldiers visit the
classrooms and sign autographs. Everyone is welcome to join this year’s ceremony, May 27th at
8:00 a.m.
The Tustin Unified School District continues to place an emphasis on the great nation
that we live in, and on the importance of giving back to our heroes. Thank you.
