The document discusses architecting happiness and explores how creators can impact user happiness through their work. It provides perspectives from over 100 survey responses and interviews with creators on what happiness means to them and how their work relates to delivering user happiness. The document also provides background information on positive psychology and different frameworks for understanding happiness, such as flourishing, flow, and set point theory. The goal is to help creators think about how to work towards happy users and their own happiness.

In the experience of many
creators, companies do not seek
"happiness" for their customers.
Companies and happiness
In your experience, do you think that business
looks for happy customers?
Not always. They don't
understand that happy
customers are key for
profitability.
Only sometimes. They
don't care enough
about customers.

â
Business is not explicitly asking for that. But they want happy
customers, loyal customers, loyal employees... They don't use
that vocabulary, but implicitly they do ask for that.
There are opposing views on companies and
happiness. Looking at the goal, yes they look for it.
Looking into the details, no, they donât.
â
Most businesses put business goals ahead of making people
happy. It's about extracting the maximum value and making
lots of money. Because business culture doesn't deïŹne
happiness as a goal by itself, it's hard to sell a project about
"making people happy."
Companies and happiness

value of making a positive emotional impact.

The problem with ordinary happiness is that it
never lasts, because the objects of happiness
don't last. A happy event is soon followed by a
sad one, and shoes wear out. So, the happy "fix"
is never permanent, so we keep looking.
The happiness that is a factor of enlightenment
is not dependent on objects, but is a state of
mind cultivated through mental discipline.

Mindfulness
in design is about a
pleasing awareness.
It's knowing that this is
good, that this makes
me happy. It's
satisfying. You feel it in
your body. As Norman
suggests, it's visceral.
Flow
by M. Csikszent-
mihalyi. In his book,
Flow, he describes a
state that people enter
when they are fully
focused in which they
experience immersion
in a task or activity to
the point where they
lost track of time
Meaning comes from
a feeling of fellowship,
contributing, and
making the world a
better place. It's about
harmony and, as
Norman says,
reflectivenessâ
because good things
happen to you, you
want to do good for
others.
