Music Video Analysis – (Writing in the Distraction Factory: Routledge 1992) ANDREW GOODWIN

Main Ideologies Goodwin Proposed: Andrew Goodwin stated that there were six main ideologies that consist when analysing different music videos. These are as follows: ,[object Object],As displayed in the picture to the left, Girls Aloud in ‘Sound of the Underground’ show a distinctive choreographed routine. This is a typical convention of what is seen in girl group’s videos. In My Chemical Romance – ‘Famous Last Words’ there is a clear understanding represented throughout which reveals that the type of video is performance based. This is shown through medium long shots and long shots of the band playing as to perform to a crowd.

Main Ideologies Goodwin Proposed: ,[object Object],In Alicia Keys’ song ‘Teenage Love Affair’ there is a clear reference to the lyrics and the on screen visuals. The visuals therefore illustrate the lyrics. Lyrics: ‘I’m gonna give you this letter’ Lyrics: ‘I love our secret meeting, on the fifth floor staircase’

Main Ideologies Goodwin Proposed: ,[object Object],In the video ‘Neva Soft’ by Ms. Dynamite there is a point in which the music changes to an abrupt, fast and almost vibrating tone. Through this music change, the visuals begin to shake. This therefore shows that the visuals illustrate the music. Main Ideologies Goodwin Proposed: - The demands of the record label and how the video is likely to include the need of lots of close-up shots of the artist. Furthermore, the artist may develop a motif within the video (a recurring visual) which can be displayed subtly or more prominently. In ‘Say My Name’ by Destiny’s Child, there is a dominant use of close-ups which is used to individualise each individual member of the band.

Main Ideologies Goodwin Proposed: ,[object Object],As Goodwin stated, there tends to often be effects in videos that relate to looking through a vision. As seen in the picture to the right, in ‘Can’t Get You Out of my Head’ by Kylie Minogue, she is seen to be looking in to what appears to be a telescope. Similarly, in ‘Toxic’ by Britney Spears, the video begins with us as the audience looking through a peep hole in the door of an aeroplane.

Main Ideologies Goodwin Proposed: - Intertextuality if often used, in reference to films, television programme and other music videos). In the music video ‘Mr. Brightside’ by The Killers there is constant reference to the film Moulin Rouge. This is shown by the scene in which the two main characters are on the balcony and fireworks begin to go off in the sky. Secondly, when Nicole Kidman sings ‘Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend in Moulin Rouge, there is a clear reference to the aura in the video, along with the way in which the artists are dressed.
