Unit 78 task 2
1. Unit 78
Digital graphics for computer games
Task 2 – Artistic Styles
Photorealism is a genre of painting based on using cameras and photographs to gather visual
information which is then used to create an image which looks like it is it a photo taken from a
camera.
Here are some examples of photorealism
Some popular game titles I have included are
• Tomb Raider - The example I have shown shows determination and focus of the
character
• The last of us – This example shows emotion’s like the character is lost or something
tragic has just happened.
In games most developers show photo realistic graphics not just for a high quality gaming experience
but also to show signs of the character to display feelings whether they are cheerful, upset, angry or
focused.
During my research I found this video which shows examples of real time rendering.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QF2c1uHiYyY
In games to get the best effects and animation developers use real time rendering. Real time
rendering is when everything feels like it is in live play it played instantly. The graphics in a 3d action
game are rendered in real time by the computers video card. This means the graphics are
restructured so fast that there is no visible interruption experienced by the user.
Cel Shading

Task 2 – Artistic Styles
Also called toon shading this is a type of non-photorealistic rendering and a lighting model designed
to give the look that the computer graphic has been hand drawn. Cel- shading is mainly used to
create the same look that is used in cartoon or comics.
Cel shading in is often used in games such as dragon ball z, naruto & borderlands. Cel shading gives
the effect that something that is made three dimensional is then rendered to look two dimensional
like it was hand drawn in the same sense as a comic book.
Abstract art uses its form and colour to create a structure which exists with an
amount of independence from pictorial allusions in the world. This kind of art uses
simple shapes such as squares and circles to create pieces of art such as characters
and paintings like the kids TV show Phineas and ferb or work from noel fielding.
3. Unit 78
Digital graphics for computer games
Task 2 – Artistic Styles
Abstract art in games is normally used on the simple games like angry birds but can also be used in
more developed games such as minecraft created by mojang and notch.
One of the most simple yet popular abstract games that is out there is pacman simple game play
avoid/collect/eliminate is the key role .This game is abstract because it uses very little effects and
very simple shapes in actual fact the inspiration behind pacman was down to a pizza missing a slice.
The original name for pacman was called pakuman this is because of the noise it made when it
opens and closes its mouth. The concept of eating to get stronger was inspired by the tv show pop
eye.
As a result of all this it was then renamed to be called puck man because of its resemblance to a
hockey puck.
Abstract games do not in any way relate to real life objects, abstract games developers focus on
using lines and geometric shapes to create something which is unique in its own way by only using

geometric shapes and lines.
In some abstract games the objects tend to be distorted and not very clear to see at a glance.
An example of this style would be minecraft the game where everything is made of simple geometric
shapes mainly cubes.
Here is an in game screen shot:
The last kind I’m going to talk about is exaggerated games this is games that are far from simulated
reality more along the lines of a young ninja god who has a gigantic 9 tailed fox living inside of him
yes of course that was a reference to the popular anime title naruto.
There are many other examples of over exaggerated games I can think of and a couple of them are
• Soul eater – Popular anime where you have to fight and collect soles whilst your
weapons are also living beings.
5. Unit 78
Digital graphics for computer games
Task 2 – Artistic Styles
•
• Dragon ball Z – One of the most known
fighting exaggerated games for many different reasons one of which is you can
achieve god like powers and crush your enemies with balls of energy.
• Halo 4 – This isn’t much of an exaggerated game but because of the objects and
equipment that is used in this game as well as the gameplay and layout itself I
choose this to be an exaggerated game.
• Pokémon – Probably the most known unrealistic game but with reference to some
humanity – Training a pet like creature to be stronger and wiser than it was when
you first got it.
This is more my genre than most of the other kind of games simply because I prefer they were
meant to be which is games not a realistic play through of World War 2.
6. Unit 78

Task 2 – Artistic Styles
Exaggerated games are games which have overstepped the boundaries of being even remotely
realistic but even though they are not real the characters still display feelings and life.
Exaggerated games use crazy abilities that are inhuman such as catching an animal like creature
inside a ball which can be 100 times of it or saving the world from an alien who evolves and gains
stronger abilities over 5 times.
There are also games which can look very realistic but have very overexagerate but cleverly
explainable abilities the best example I can think of is the recently released bioshock infinite which
shows you firstly playing as a typical new Yorker who owes money to the wrong people but further
into the game you gain powers by drinking from a bottle which is filled which is very scientifically
clever elements
Because it shows that if you were to lose those items you would just be an average human being.
An easy way to explain this would be to say it would be like you were a super hero for a day not
batman because he doesn’t have any real super powers more like superman with lasers coming from
his eyes and the incredible hulk with big green hands that can break your face.
One example of realistically exaggerated games is call of duty. This game immerses you into an open
combat shooting playing field with guns used by official soldiers in the world. This game is
exaggerated because it brings you closest to the real thing as possible the game makes you seem as
if you are a soldier with a group of people defending your headquarters from enemy soldiers using it
does this by allowing you to use and access official things used in the real life soldier duties such as
the m16 a4 and the baret 50 calliber. It does all this making you seem as though you are in open
conflict when realistically you are sat in the comfort of your own home.
This
game
gets you closer to the community working together with real people to fulfil your objective whilst
talking to them and layout out a plan of action. The graphics in call of duty are very realistic making it
seem even more like the real thing an example of this is when your player is shot your soldier will
begin to bleed and you have a blurred vision. Another example is when using a sniper rifle to focus
your shot like a real marine you need to hold your breath and your shot will be still but only for a
short amount of time before you get out of breath then the scope will not be as steady.
