It’s nearly always a beautiful day in
Perth. The sunny city is maturing,
with the wealth of the recent boom
showing in a fresh crop of architectural
wonders and cultural offerings.
The identities of Perth’s established
urban villages have crystallised, and
vibrant new pockets are emerging.
Coastal communities host festivals
on the sand and markets overlooking
the sea. In the metropolitan CBD
and Northbridge, laneways buzz with
street art, lights and hidden pathways
leading to pop-ups and exhibitions.
Every week, there’s a new secret
bar or restaurant to try, a street
festival to mosey through, comedians
to laugh at, musicians to listen to,
performing arts to watch, a revitalised
precinct to visit, and a seasonal event
to appeal to some or all of your
senses. Luckily, the easygoing essence
Truly a 21st century city, Perth has the
best of all worlds; a lush metropolis
THAT’s CLOSE TO BOTH the river and THE
sea, with an eclectic downtown vibe.
perth city
remains, despite this cultural and
aesthetic growth. Put this down to the
acres of natural bushland and pristine
riverside running right through town,
creating a literal breath of fresh air and
a home to wildlife.
There’s a feeling of co-creation
in many communities, and a drive to
develop the city with a 21st century
consciousness, without losing the
‘P-City’ warmth and friendliness.
It’s not just Elizabeth Quay and
the city centre experiencing this
revitalisation: inner-city pockets such
as Mt Lawley, Leederville, Maylands,
Subiaco, Mt Hawthorn, North Perth
and Victoria Park are bustling hubs
in their own right, their cafe and
shopping strips bursting with locals.
Even the city’s long-time fans
are excited about the future for this
thriving, cosmopolitan hub.

DO AND SEE
BEACHES
You don’t have to leave the city to go
surfing. Suits who love the water drive
to the swell at Trigg Beach from the
CBD in less than 30 minutes. If you’re
not brave enough for the breaks, you
can watch the pros in action while
sipping coffee at beachside cafe.
For a gentle swim, ask any
local and they’ll recommend
Cott (Cottesloe Beach). With
its surrounding bars, cafes and
restaurants, many memories have
been formed on Cottesloe’s white
sand, its grassy knolls also perfect for
watching the sunset.
PARKS
Patches of lush green sit among the
skyscrapers and city concrete, with
16 major parklands within the city.
Perth’s oldest, Stirling Gardens,
opened as a botanical garden in 1845,
and some of the original trees from
that time are still standing.
The breathtaking view from
Kings Park, situated above the city,
is a must-see priority on any visitor’s
itinerary. The biggest inner-city park
in the world, Kings Park showcases

ARTS
Perth Cultural Centre is home to
the Art Gallery of WA, holding
contemporary and historic works
representing Australia and the world.
The Perth Institute of Contemporary
Arts is just around the corner and runs
programs in art, theatre and dance.
If you’re getting to these by foot,
you can spot art in laneways and on
buildings, with the city’s street art
evolving of late.
FOR KIDS
Science discovery centre Scitech is
pretty much the coolest place in town
for kids; its science-based programs
make learning fun. The Aquarium
of Western Australia will leave kids
mesmerised by ocean life, while at
Adventure World there are water slides
to cool you down, and thrilling rides
for the whole family. Perth Zoo offers
‘eye to eye experiences’, where kids
can get up close and personal to their
favourite animals. The WA Museum
features programs like Tiny Discovery
where kids can learn through
storytelling, crafts and artifacts.
Stay
There are plenty of hotels and apartments in the CBD, including five-star
international hotels with river views – the perfect place for a staycation
or refreshing mini-break. Northbridge has embraced the boutique hotel,
a treat for those wanting to stay in a personalised space, right in the heart
of the entertainment, eateries and contemporary bars.
For ocean lovers, hotels line Perth’s sunset coast, capturing those
epic WA sunsets over popular shores, particularly Scarborough Beach,
Cottesloe, and Hillarys Boat Harbour.

Just north of
Northbridge is Hyde
Park. A north-of-the-
river staple, it often
hosts ethereal weddings,
romantic picnics, and
shady lunchtime naps.
SHOP
It’s a good time to shop in Perth,
with popular international retailers
now open in the city. Hay and Murray
streets, the main shopping malls in
the CBD, are connected with cute
arcades and underground specialty
shops. Between St Georges Terrace
and Hay Street, the Enex 100 mall
caters to style, with specialty fashion
and lifestyle stores. If you’re a luxury
lover, head straight to King Street,
which houses everything high end.
SWAN RIVER
No wonder the Swan River is iconic:
the way Perth’s lights reflect off the
water each evening is magnificent.
Opposite the University of Western
Australia, Matilda Bay is a great spot
to walk, with views of the city and
Kings Park. If you’re visiting the Bell

Before you go
Whatever the season, don’t get
about without sunscreen. The
world’s driest city is also one of
the sunniest, with Perth having
intense UV rays all year round.
Public transport
It works best when you’re central
but there are trains from Perth to
all major suburbs, and the bus
routes will fill in most gaps.
Don’t leave
town without...
driving down West Coast
Highway. You may not be
a water baby, but Perth’s
sunset over the ocean is
truly incredible.

Fremantle is a captivating town
brimming with history, creativity,
culture and fashion. From the
moment you first set foot on its
streets and the salty breeze known
as the Fremantle Doctor hits you,
you’ll be captivated by the lovingly
preserved sandstone buildings, the
colourful shopfronts, and all the
city’s nooks and crannies hinting at
treasures to be found.
The Whadjuk Noongar people
have tens of thousands of years
of history, living on the land long
before the Europeans arrived in
1829. Convicts were brought in
later to build the settlement from
the ground up. Three-thousand
A port city with a convict and blue-collar
history, and an eclectic mix of residents
who frequent hip cafes and heritage pubs,
Freo is both literally and figuratively left
of Perth’s centre.
FREMANTLE
Heritage-listed buildings remain, such
as the Henderson Street warders’
cottages, the notorious Roundhouse
penitentiary, and the Fremantle Prison.
Al fresco dining is a mainstay of
Fremantle life: take a stroll along
Market Street – better known as
the Cappuccino Strip – and see for
yourself. The burgeoning crowd
outside the Freo markets, meanwhile,
will draw you in to sample locally
crafted goods, and the latest in foodie
and artisan trends, not to mention
vibrant street performers.
Outside of the city centre is
East Fremantle, where George
Street buzzes with energy. South
Freo is home to South Beach, the
hangout for the local pooch-loving
community as well as the Fremantle
Dockers AFL team. North Freo
has its own appeal, with its cluster
of new-school restaurants and
antique stores.
The buildings of West End are
filled with niche stores, galleries,
and cafes; try Wray Avenue’s
legendary Italian store, for freshly
baked cannoli, cured meats, olives
and authentic antipasto.
The sea breeze will draw you
to Esplanade Park and across it to
the port. There, you’ll find the
ultimate fish and chip strip, with
huge restaurants filling renovated
wharfs and silos.
Eat and drink
Start at the Cappuccino Strip for Italian gelato and people watching. For many,
a visit to Fremantle isn’t complete without some local seafood while looking over
the harbour, and while Italian is popular on this side of town, you can easily find
other cuisines such as Indian and Mexican on the main strip.
South Terrace in South Freo has fabulous brunch places with specialist
coffee, as well as Perth’s best hotdogs from Run Amok.
Fremantle is home of the great Australian pub, with laid-back beer gardens
perfect for a Sunday afternoon session. It’s also a hub for the microbrewers, with
the stylish harbourside Little Creatures a mecca for beer lovers.
Rising stars and hospitality hot shots are making their mark on the town, too:
discover North Freo’s small bars, with their mismatched furniture and exposed
fittings, plus re-imagined burger joints and boutique bakeries.

meet a fairy princess, buy enchanted items, or have a party held by
a fantastical host.

is the place. Grungy and familiar, the
bar puts on open-mike nights, as well
as local and international acts. In the
basement of The Norfolk Hotel hides
the den-like Odd Fellow: head down
to get up close and personal with
great musicians. Committed to the
Perth music scene, Swan Basement in
North Fremantle puts on rocking gigs
that are quintessentially Australian.
COMEDY
Tucked away next to the towering silos
of the Little Creatures Brewery, the
Comedy Lounge is a quality venue
hosting a huge variety of comedians
every week. Sip a renowned Little
Creatures beer between laughs.
DO AND SEE
ART
With art hanging on the original walls
of what was once a women’s lunatic
asylum, Fremantle Arts Centre holds
many haunting stories. Nowadays it
also hosts free exhibitions, expansive
music programs, and art classes.
Resident artists also live and create at
Freo’s Moore Moore Studios. Have a
bite to eat in the quaint garden before
perusing contemporary art. There’s
an independent institute located
on Bather’s Beach, too: Kidogo Arts
House is a cave-like building hosting
small exhibitions.
LIVE MUSIC
The Fremantle Arts Centre is a big gig
venue beloved by both musos and
crowds. For an intimate setting, Mojos
STAY There are great bed
and breakfasts scattered around
Fremantle, allowing you to live
like a village local, giving your
holiday a little personality. You’ll
smell the salt air wherever you are
in Freo, but if you’re lusting
after a beach holiday there are
apartments right behind South
Beach. If you’re looking for a little
history or excitement, Fremantle
Prison Youth Hostel (YHA) resides
in the heritage-listed Fremantle
Prison, the same complex that
used to house the Women’s
Prison. It’s easy to get around
town wherever you stay, most
places are within walking distance
of the city centre, otherwise
Freo’s free CAT buses stop at all
major areas.

FREMANTLE MARKETS
The Fremantle Markets are a must-see if only for the building’s heritage architecture.
Enter the maze and enjoy the immense, buzzing energy on market days. Discover the vast array
of local produce, peruse independent wares, and hang out in the yard to devour some seriously
tasty treats. If you’re looking for entertainment, bask in the craziness of performances and kooky
characters that are an integral part of the market experience. Open Friday to Sunday.
