1. The appropriateness of the education library
departments for the knowledge society:
A Case study on the Department of Libraries and Information at Princess
Nora Bint Abdulrahman University
1- The Study Problem:
The study focuses on the vocational programs used to qualify
librarians and information experts, which become required to adjust to
the labor market and its needs of information. This can be seen by
tracking how the methods of producing, processing, storing, and
recovering information have developed across history.
2- Aims and Significance:
This study aims at analyzing the educational plan used in
library and information department at Princess Nora Bint
Abdulrahman University in order to recognize how appropriate it
is for Knowledge community.
The significance of this study where its focus on qualifying library
and information graduates, who are the human factor and the input responsible to achieve the goals of libraries and
information organizations, which have a significant role in building the society knowledge.
3- Results and Recommendations:
After examined the educational program applied at library and information department in Princess Nora Bint Abd
el Rahman University, the following modifications should be carried out:
Reducing the number of courses by dispensing with some of them, incorporating similar ones
together and deliver them via learner – cantered approach.
2. Update the course description as the current
educational plan was prepared almost ten years
ago. The course content should fulfill the needs
of libraries and information centers and their
use of technology in the operations or the
services they provide.
Increasing the number of courses that are
related to information technology, its
economics and knowledge management.
Paying more attention to the practical aspect.
Although there is adequate number of field
training courses, there are other courses that are taught theoretically though they should be
studied in a practical manner. Such courses may include: internet and its services, information
storing, etc…
4- Recommendations:
The program used at the department
should be developed in a way that
suit knowledge society. This can be
done by focusing on educational
courses that support the development
of students' skills and increase the
ability to invest information.
Staff members should enhance their
practical knowledge in order to be able to teach the academic courses effectively and in a
professional manner that simulates the work in information organizations.
Applying total quality and academic accreditation standards to department's program.
Creating co-operation between vocational associations and library and information departments by
focusing on the issue of perpetual education to enrich knowledge to enable them from improving
their tools at work.
Continuing to work hard to revaluate the programs used in library and information department
according to updated ideas and concepts.
