2. Seminar Overview
As Enterprise Computing evolved from individual applications and systems to
large scale integration and interoperability of Web Services, the Web itself has
undergone a rapid transformation. From the phonographic Web of the early 90’s,
it evolved into read-write web heralding Collaborative Computing paradigms and
it is now fast evolving into a Semantic and Agentive Web. The Internet has
become a computing, deployment and programming platform in itself. As
content is evolving from data and information to machine understandable
meaning, the underlying usage is evolving from individual usage to goal oriented,
self organizing communities centered around content, information and other
services. The semantic/agentive web is all about creating and harnessing the
power of collective knowledge.
This one day knowledge seminar focuses on bringing together in depth
experiential insights on the underlying concepts, techniques and technologies
that govern the semantic computing with an emphasis on architectural aspects of
building Semantic applications. We cover such topics as representing domain
knowledge using ontology design techniques and tools (RDF, RDFS, OWL,
SPARQL), schemaless databases and their implications such as Mulgara. We
illustrate with case studies the architectural challenges of organizing massively
scalable content repositories, user experience models and issues in designing

3. applications for communities using our own experience in the past few years in
large scale content management, Content Management, Agriculture, Education
and Cultural Informatics Domains.
The Seminar is brought to you by Canopus Consulting – a new generation
enterprise architecture consulting firm. The speakers are leaders in Cultural
Informatics, Semantic and Collaborative Computing with several patents and
publications, awards and workshops to their credit.
9.30 - 10.30am The power and the pursuit of meaning
A Historical and Interpretative tour of everything “semantic”, and the evolution
of the Web and Computing from a technology and architecture perspective.
The shift from phonographic to agentive and ultimately cultural web. The
Information-Content-Culture shift and impacts on societies, enterprises, as a
whole. The ownership of content, contextualizing content and goal oriented
communities, the implications of creating collective and sharable knowledge.
The various aspects of Ontologies and their role in domain representations. The
web as a platform for application development, various aspects of large scale
content repositories.
10.45 - 12.45pm From Logical to Ontological
The fundamental aspect of semantic web technology is to facilitate "agentive"
applications to interact without needing to integrate using application specific
APIs. This enables applications to evolve and change independently, yet retain
the ability to interact.
At the heart of this capability is representing the semantics (behavior) of a
domain as an ontology designed to be machine processed. Languages such as
RDF, RDFS, OWL and SPARQL have emerged as accepted standards to
represent, exchange and infer ontological information.
In this session, we will illustrate how to represent domain knowledge as an
ontology and make inferences. We will introduce schemaless databases as a
means of unlocking the meaning within data. We will use a real world case

4. study to present the architectural aspects of building such applications and the
related technologies. We will discuss OWL, SPARQL, RDFS and RDF.
12.45 – 2.00 pm – Lunch Break
2.00 – 3.00 pm Folklore of User Experience
Highlight Web 3.0: Design Metaphors
“If you build, engage, share, collaborate, personalize, syndicate, secure and
open policies …provide multiple device access to what they want, when they
want it and how they want it… they will come” - Future Web 3.0
Design around Users & Data. Prototype – Create it, Learn from it, Change it and
Refine it. Technology is a the driver along but it’s not what the software does;
it’s what the user wants it to do.
Linking Data is the power of 3.0.
Key Factors: Always Connected, HTML 5, Semantic Web (Meaning of Data),
Cloud Computing, Websites as Web Services, SaaS, Persistent Identities, Data
as a Service
3.15 – 4.30pm Enterprising Semantics
In this session, we focus on domain specific ontologies, using semantic
computing techniques in Enterprise Applications, Architectural issues,
challenges and insights into building an Ontological aware middleware.
Embedding Semantics in Variable Names, embedding semantics in Object
behavior, to representing knowledge using information models and formal
ontologies.
