4. Why have a strategy?
• Response to national policy and ambition
• Organisational commitment
• Leadership and responsibility
• Aims and Goals
• Actions and outcomes
• Resources
In partnership with:
5. Some enduring challenges
• Compared to medical colleagues nurses midwives, allied health
professionals, pharmacists and clinical scientists have a relatively
poorly developed research culture and training
• Much practice not evidence based
• Poorly developed career pathways into research
• NIHR Clinical Academic Career (CAC) pathway
– Focus on research leaders/careers
– Small numbers
– Focus is on University contact – people fall through the gap
when back in clinical practice
– RCB of the workforce (e.g. a research aware, engaged and
active workforce) remains problematic.
– Cultural change?

8. CMFT Strategic Commitments for Research
• To ensure research is 'close to practice' and highlights its usefulness to practice.
• To develop appropriate skills, and confidence, through training, secondments and
development opportunities to apply skills in practice.
• To develop linkages, partnerships and collaborations that enhance research
capacity building.
• To ensure active, actionable and appropriate dissemination of research activity and
outputs locally, nationally and internationally.
• To ensure continuity and sustainability of research activity amongst NM&AHP.
• To develop the appropriate infrastructure and leadership to enhance research
capacity building and a research-led culture

How do we make this happen in clinical practice contexts???
Alongside the launch of the strategy, we will be developing a delivery plan, overseen by an NMAHP Research Implementation Group. The Group will review progress over time, and seek funding and resources to support NMAHP research development at a Trust level.
Information to support research development and capacity building is available for individuals and managers on the Nursing, Midwives and Allied health Professionals page on the CMFT website: https://research.cmft.nhs.uk/partnering/nurses-midwives-and-allied-health-professionals
Heads of Nursing and AHP managers have been asked to commit to developing NMAHP research, and delivering the Strategy, within their areas. In the following pages the following information has been provided by Divisional leads to support and develop research within their areas.

Nurses employed principally to undertake research within the clinical environment’
(UKCRC subcommittee for nurses in clinical research (workforce) page 32)’
Undertake work associated with the efficient and successful conduct of clinical trials’ (Johnson & Stevenson 2010)
The band 5 development posts are a plan to put people in post for 6-12months and provide them with research experience etc to prepare them for a band 6 post
Project co-ordinators are where nurses are taking on the whole co-ordination of studies
Generic posts are nurses who provide cover for vacancies/long term sickness/studies that need help if recruitment is an issue etc
The 70 day target and time to target are NIHR performance standards
70 days to recruit first patient after SSI submitted
Time to target is – recruiting the number of patients agreed in the contract within the time agreed e.g. 10 patients in 2 years
