2011 Environmental Symposium -Roundtable 2

  1. 1. 2nd Annual North Carolina Federal Environmental Symposium June 10, 2011 Hosted by: North Carolina Military Business Center Sponsored by:
  2. 2. Roundtable 2 This roundtable will address: •Solar hot water •Cooling tower systems and potable water conservation (26% improvement in efficiency by FY2020) •Treatment distribution, reuse and recycling •Waste water and storm water management •Ground water contamination •Implementation of storm water provisions of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 •Solid waste minimization and recycling •Electronics disposal; toxic chemical disposal •Construction and demolition waste reduction (60% by FY2015) •Landfill gas •Achieving 50% recycling and waste diversion by 2015
  3. 3. Roundtable 2 Fort Bragg Initiatives Current Initiatives (Installation/Agency: Fort Bragg) 1. No new permanent potable water irrigation systems 2. Storm water remains on project site (use of low impact development conveyances) 3. Year-round water conservation policy (multi-level, multi-agency) 4. Source points: potable and non-potable 5. Hydrant use permits 6. Solar domestic hot water incorporated into all new construction that meet LCCA 7. Hold quarterly electronic-waste (e-waste) drives and offer e-waste drop-off site year round 8. Cooking oil to bio-diesel production 9. C&D Contractor Training 10. Initiated direct sales of materials
  4. 4. Roundtable 2 Fort Bragg Future Needs Future Needs (Installation/Agency: Fort Bragg) 1. Storm/rain water harvesting systems (gray water reuse) 2. Watershed analysis 3. Solar domestic hot water incorporated into all new construction that meet LCCA 4. Expand recycling through the Incentives Program and expansion of recycling team 5. Look at old landfills for methane capture 6. Expand direct sales of materials
  5. 5. Roundtable 2 Camp Lejeune Initiatives Current Initiatives (Installation/Agency: Camp Lejeune ) Solid Waste Minimization and Recycling: 1. Humanitarian Assistance Program (HAP): On-going book donation program- MCB CL has shipped 1000 lbs of books to foreign countries. 2. Concrete Crushing and Reutilization: MCB CL instituted a no-cost concrete crushing operation to be reused in Base construction projects. In 2010, 21,270 tons of concrete was crushed and reused. 3. Wood Grinding: MCB CL: wood grinding operation- wood, crates pallets tree debris and yard diverted from the landfill and burned for energy or composted. 4. Electronic Recycling : Annual Electronics Recycling Event for base personnel This year, 10,000 pounds of electronics were recycled
  6. 6. Roundtable 2 Camp Lejeune Initiatives Current Initiatives (Installation/Agency: Camp Lejeune ) Water Conservation: 5. All new construction requires low flow toilets, urinals, faucets and showerheads and when possible retrofits existing buildings. 6. Maintains long-term water distribution system leak detection and repair program with periodic leak surveys and repairs and maintains leaking faucets 7. Installing, reading, and maintaining a network of meters to allow for water tracking. 8. Develops and implements public awareness and education programs for all environmental compliance.
  7. 7. Roundtable 2 Camp Lejeune Initiatives Current Initiatives (Installation/Agency: Camp Lejeune ) Stormwater: 9. Continues to follow Coastal County requirements for stormwater, includes EISA Stormwater language in MILCONS and requires the use of Low Impact Development (LID) Best Management Practices (BMPs) when possible. 10. Implementing master (stormwater) permits that will cover entire watersheds and require treatment through LIDs when possible.
  8. 8. Roundtable 2 Camp Lejeune Future Needs Future Needs (Installation/Agency: Camp Lejeune ) 1. Recyclers for pallets, drums and mattresses. 2. Small Business furniture repair – repair government furniture that is to be landfill. Some of the desk and chairs need minor repairs. 3. Continuation of annual recycling programs – wood grinding, book program, electronics recycling
  9. 9. Roundtable 2 MCAS Cherry Point Initiatives Current Initiatives (Installation/Agency: MCAS Cherry Point ) 1. Solar water heating for pool 2. Potable water meter installation 3. Recycling of filter backwash at water treatment plant 4. Water distribution system mixers (elevated storage tanks) 5. Reclaimed water use on golf course 6. Repairs to steam and condensate lines
  10. 10. Roundtable 2 MCAS Cherry Point Initiatives Current Initiatives (Installation/Agency: MCAS Cherry Point ) 7. LEED standards for new buildings 8. Qualified Recycling Program 9. Waste minimization – used solvent elimination; waste oil/fuels reuse; scrap wood energy recovery; office paper recycling; materials recycling facility 10. Consolidated Hazardous Material Reutilization and Inventory Management Program 11. Low-impact development – bio-retention areas; cisterns
  11. 11. Roundtable 2 MCAS Cherry Point Future Needs Future Needs (Installation/Agency: MCAS Cherry Point ) 1. Drinking water standards met without need to flush distribution system 2. Reclaimed water use on athletic fields, at central heating plant, and wastewater plant 3. Sustainable building standards for improvements on existing facilities 4. Coal ash reuse vs. disposal 5. Water treatment plant softener media reuse vs. disposal 6. Low-impact development – bio-retention areas; permeable pavement; cisterns; green roofs
  12. 12. Roundtable 2 GSA Initiatives Current Initiatives (Installation/Agency: GSA) 1. Water use reduction projects, advanced water metering, and awareness campaigns 2. “Green Rooms” set up for recycling/re-using office supplies and products 3. Electronics donation program 4. 50% of Construction materials must be recycled 5. Water Diversion: 20 buildings in the region currently measure for water diversion
  13. 13. Roundtable 2 GSA Future Needs Future Needs (Installation/Agency: GSA) 1. Waste usage reduction : 16% of 2007 use by 2015 2. Goal of 70% with a minimum of 50% for all regional recycling
