2. What is a scholarly journal article?
Scholarly journal articles are pieces of writing that both outline the
results of research and are published in a scholarly journal.
These are often reviewed by a panel of other scholars prior to publication
in order to ensure their quality. This is called peer-review.
A process of post-publication review may also happen, but primarily
through letters to the editor of the journal and other open forums.
The criteria for quality varies from publication to publication, but the
accuracy of an article’s findings, its impartiality, and the rigour of its
methodology are usually what pre-publication reviewers look for.
Although the findings of an article need not be novel, they do need to be
original as well.
3. Types of Scholarly Peer Review:
Open - Masked - Double Masked - Triple Masked
Triple Masked
Authors and reviewers
are unknown to each
other, but so are editors -
- who are unknown to the
both author and the
reviewer.
Masked
Author does not know
who the reviewers
are.
Double Masked
Reviewers don't know
the identity of
authors, and vice
versa. This is the
most common form of
peer review practiced
in social science and
humanities journals.
Open
Author does not know
who the reviewers
are.
