Photo 1: the women seem to be preparing for a big feast, because there is multiple women so if it
was a meal for a family there would probably only be one so this may be in a restaurant or hotel or
just some big celebration feast
Photo 2: Hitler is shaking the hand of a young boy and the women seem happy about it, this seems to
be used to spread that Hitler is a good person because he is kind to children
Photo 3: there seems to be a peaceful protest going on because the black man being attacked by the
dog is not armed and he is not fighting back and none of the other black people in the protest group
are being violent
Photo 4: this is a poster, it portrays that the US isn’t really as free as it claims to be
Photo 5: Immigrants are coming from Elise Island to the US
Photo 6: Immigrants are being checked for disease and stuff before being allowed into America
What message do you think the photographer was trying to convey?
Photo 1: that women do all meal preparations
Photo 2: Hitler is a good man so you should trust him
Photo 3: Their right to peaceful protest is being taken
Photo 4: the US isn’t as free as it claims to be
Photo 5: US is a sanctuary for immigrants
Photo 6: Immigrants had to go through a lot of tests and checkups before being allowed to go to
America, the US must’ve thought they could bring over disease
Why is this photograph important to history?
Photo 1: it shows how women have progressed and moved from working at homes to having jobs and
being main breadwinners of households
Photo 2: this seems to be some kind of poster so it helped Hitler get into power which then caused
World War II and the holocaust
Photo 3: The Birmingham Campaign was a big part of civil rights movement, it started a series of
marshes, boycotts and other forms of peaceful protest
Photo 4: black people weren’t being given the same rights that everyone else had even though the
US is a free country
Photo 5: Elise Island helped bring over a lot of immigrants
Photo 6: Immigrants coming over had to go through a lot of strenuous stuff, some people even got
their names changed because they were too difficult to pronounce

3. 1-the women are doing a job because the lady with pants seems to be the boss, they’re preparing for
a big meal, this picture takes place in the 40s or 50s
2-this was a poster used during Hitlers campaign, it sent the message of Hitler being a kind person,
people loved Hitler
3-a group of black people were just trying to peacefully protest, cops and people in government did
not approve of these protest
4-this is a poster that portrays the US not given equal rights to everyone, the US is hanging people
that don’t neccassarily deserve it

4. 5-the people are immigrants at Elise Island that are awaiting to go to the US, they are probably polish,
thye’re moving to find work or escape something
6- these are immigrants being processed, they are being checked for disase and illness, they are on
Elise Island
