They explain that they were sent by the government to provide support to the community after a fire and believed Malika's family had died. Malika is upset but agrees to let them stay as long as they reimburse her and find her belongings. She finds her bedroom has been turned into a dormitory and is now shared with Ruby Mires and Lucas Hobb. Malika agrees to help the group rebuild the town in hopes of distracting herself from the loss of her parents.

1. Malika returned home from the sleepover at the flats to find her home stripped of her
parents things and replaced by plain walls and plainer furniture. Not only had her
home been completely redecorated without her consent, but there were three
complete strangers sat in in HER living room.
2. Two scuttled away while the
third, their leader, sat her down to
explain. His name was Captain
Grant Bellamy, and he and his
associates were sent by the
government to look after this
district and needed a base of
operations. They had heard this
house’s occupants had died in the
fire, so had moved in.
Had they known she had survived
and was only down the street they
would never have stripped it
without her consent.
They would reimburse her for the
inconvenience and mental trauma
of loss of her dead parents
possessions of course… but they
would need to stay.
3. Malika went to her bedroom to
see of anything of hers was
left, to find it had been turned
into a dormitory. A woman
there tried to calm her down.
She introduced herself as Ruby
Mires, and apologised again for
making Malika’s awful
situation even harder. She
hoped that Malika would
stay, and they could be friends.
Besides, Malika could be a help
to them. She was in the police
cadets wasn’t she? Perhaps
their purpose, helping the
community, might help distract
her from the death of her
parents.
4. Malika agreed she might help them, but was in no mood to become friends just now.
She spent the day watching them plan how to rebuild the town and gain the residents
trust. That night she slept in her room, now shared with Ruby and the third member of
their group, Lucas Hobb.
5. It had been a couple of days
since the fire, and there had
been no reprisals. Edward
decided it was safe to emerge
from his bunker. Warren
surprised him by giving him a
bear hug rather than a
handshake to express his
gratitude. His family were all
alive, not everyone had been
so lucky.
6. Megan was the first out, and was amazed
to walk into rain. She had never seen rain
before, having lived her whole life in the
artificially sunny Appaloosa Plains. She
supposed the government must have
finally turned off the machine that
cancelled all weather except for
sunshine.
7. The Baileys house was a burnt out
wreck, so Teresa headed for the lights
of the flats. Her best friend Bernice
rushed out to embrace her, ignoring
the rain. She had thought her friends
family to all be dead, and her relief
was overwhelming.
8. Everyone in the Street was now
accounted for. The group of
neighbours went to see the
official looking man who had
stuck a sign on the front of the
William’s house.
While they waited for someone to
answer the door the Baileys were
filled in on what they had
missed, conversation ranging
from the fire, to those they had
lost and how they were going to
afford to rebuild.
Eventually Malika stuck her head
out and told them Captain
Bellamy was out, but had left
emergency rations and clothes for
them all. He would address them
formally tomorrow, they should
present themselves here at 9am.
9. They did as the were asked, feeling a little strange in their almost identical outfits. Only
a few kept their own clothes on, not caring about making a good first impression.
Bellamy was conducting a census, and deciding who needed the most help, and in
what order he should rebuild the Street.
10. Bellamy interviewed them all indivually, spending more time with
orphans Annette and Julian. Bellamy trusted Annette to look after
herself for now, but Julian was just a child…
11. He asked Julian a lot of questions including his
living arrangements before the fire and whether
he had any contact details for his father…
In the end though, he ruled that Julian could
stay with the Kasitovas. They were an
established family unit. Bernice was thrilled, she
and Gracie had worried he’d be taken away.
12. Bellamy sent them to a temporary
holding facility in town while they
waited for a new house to be built. He
didn’t want them staying in Simon’s flat
for some reason.
In their room, Bernice and her family
changed back into their own
clothes, the emergency ones wet from
the amount they’d been nervously
sweating.
Bernice, normally so calm and sure
burst into tears from the sudden
release from tension. Julian could stay
with them, she could look after her
dead friends son.
Sonja looked on in concern, not liking
her mum being upset. She would do all
she could to help.
