“VOTE for ONE animal”
Tauhou - Waxeye, Silvereye
picture Vote for Tauhou because …it is such
an active and entertaining bird. Some
say it is the most common native bird in
NZ gardens but look carefully as it is
very small! It can be a great help in the
garden as it eats bugs and pests that
                                            damage vegetables. Tauhou is very
acrobatic - especially when it hangs
upside down as it eats its food!
Scientific names: Zosterops lateralis

tree or shrub. Their eggs are small, fragile and pale blue.
FANTAIL
Vote for the FANTAIL because it is
very friendly around humans and is
not afraid to fly around you plus it is
                                          very beautiful with its attractive
                                          fantail. It almost never stops
moving, flitting around from branch to
                                          branch, picking off insects. Even
swooping to snatch them from the air!

tail to attract mates.
The amazing, Kakapo
Vote for (this Living Thing) because it

world’s heaviest parrot and possibly the
                                            oldest living bird.The Kakapo is
definitely a loner, sleeping all day and
loves to wander around the forest at
night, alone. They only gather to breed,
and the females are left to raise the
                                            chicks alone. Just like humans…..

Pigeons are forest birds favouring lowland forests dominated by pod
carps. The Wood Pigeon is found in most areas of both the North and
South Island. You can see these birds around school flying around!
Diet Berries of the Puriri, Miro, Taraire and Karaka, supplemented by
Nikau and Kahikatea are the Wood Pigeon’s favourite food all the
year round. They also eat the berries and new growth of other
species. Wood Pigeons can drink without raising their heads to
swallow, which is unusual for a bird.
Breeding The New Zealand Wood Pigeon breeds in spring and early
summer. Mating is characterised by spectacular aerial displays of
both sexes, particularly the male. The female lays a single egg which
is very long, narrow and white. Both adults care for the egg during
the 28 day incubation period, the hen through the night and morning,
and the male midday till evening. The Wood Pigeon breeds very
slowly and studies show that fewer than 15% of chicks survive to
                                        independence.
