Objective: Introduction to Microsoft Word 2013.
When you use a computer program to create, edit, and format
text documents, you are performing a task known as word
processing. Part of the Microsoft Office 2013 suite of
programs, Microsoft Word 2013 is one of the most
sophisticated word-processing programs available. By using
Word, it is easy to efficiently create a wide range of business
and personal documents, from the simplest letter to the most
complex report. Word includes many desktop publishing
features that you can use to enhance the appearance of
documents so that they are visually appealing and easy to
read.
You can use Word to:
 Create professional-looking documents that incorporate impressive graphics.
 Give documents a consistent look by applying styles and themes that control the font,
size, color, and effects of text and the page background.
 Store and reuse pre-formatted elements such as cover pages and sidebars.
 Create personalized mailings to multiple recipients without repetitive typing.
 Make information in long documents accessible by compiling tables of contents, indexes,
and bibliographies.
 Coauthor documents by controlling who can make change and the types of change that
can be made, as well as by removing personal and confidential information.
For many people, Word is the first Office program they will use. All the Office 2013 programs
share a common working environment, called the user interface, so you can apply basic
techniques that you learn in Word, such as those for creating and working with files to other
Office programs.

HARD DISK
A hard disk is a part of a unit often called a “disk drive”, “hard drive” or “hard disk drive” that
store and provides relatively quick access to large amounts of data on an electromagnetically
charged surface or set of surfaces. Today’s computers typically come with a hard disk that
contains several billion bytes (gigabytes) of storage. A hard disk is really
a set of stacked “disks” each of which, like phonograph records, has
data recorded electromagnetically in concentric circles or
“tracks” on the disk. A “head” (something like a phonograph arm but in a
relatively fixed position) records (writes) or reads the information
on the tracks. Two heads, one on each side of a disk, read or write the data
as the disk spins. Each read or write operation requires that data be
located, which is an operation called a “seek” (Data already in a disk
cache, however, will be located more quickly.

Exercise 1.2: Mechanical mouse working mechanism:
Mechanical mouse is a set of transistors, ICs, resistors, photo diodes, infrared emitter,
plastic rollers and a rubber ball.
When you move the mouse, the rubber ball moves the two rollers between infrared emitters and
photo diodes for controlling horizontal and vertical displacement. The signal is then send to
mouse controller, which digitizes and sends the command to the system unit.

Exercise 1.3: Optical Mouse Working Mechanism:
Optical Mouse is the newest development in the mouse sometimes also called leaser mouse,
because the leaser is at heart of this mouse. This mouse contains a built-in leaser instead of a
heavy rubber ball. When you move this mouse the leaser emits the beam of leaser light and with
the help of reflected rays it identifies the distance, direction and the speed of the move and sends
the signal to the computer.

Exercise 1.5: Standard Keyboard:
Keyboard is primary input device it is used to input text, numbers and commands. It is just like a
typewriter, which works as a communicator between the user and the computer. Most commonly
used keyboard IBM Enhanced designed by IBM, contains about 100 keys. These keys are
arranged in to the five groups namely,
 Alphanumeric keys
 Numeric keypad
 Cursor-Movement keys
 Modifier keys
 Function keys

CPU Types
There are two primary manufacturers of computer microprocessors. Intel
and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) lead the market in terms of speed
and quality. Intel’s desktop CPU’s include Celeron, Pentium and Core.
AMD’s desktop processors include Sempron, Athlon and Phenom. Intel
makes Celeron M, Pentium M and Core mobile processors for notebooks.
AMD makes mobile versions of its Sempron and Athlon, as well as the
Turion mobile processor which comes in Ultra and Dual-Core versions.
Both companies make both single-core and multi-core processors.
1. Features
Each processor has a clock speed which is measured in gigahertz
(GHz). Also, a processor has a front side bus which connects it with
the system’s random access memory (RAM.) CPUs also typically
have two or three levels of cache. Cache is a type of fast memory
which serves as a buffer between RAM and the processor. The
processor’s socket type determines the motherboard type where it can
be installed transistors.
2. Functions
A microprocessor is a silicon chip containing
millions of microscopic this chip functions as the
computer’s brain. It processes the instruction or
operations contained within executable computer
programs. Instead of taking instructions directly
off of the hard drive, the processor takes its
instructions from memory. This greatly increases
the computer’s
speed.

You can use Word to:  Create professional-looking documents that incorporate impressive graphics.  Give documents a consistent look by applying styles and themes that control the font, size, color, and effects of text and the page background.  Store and reuse pre-formatted elements such as cover pages and sidebars.  Create personalized mailings to multiple recipients without repetitive typing.  Make information in long documents accessible by compiling tables of contents, indexes, and bibliographies.  Coauthor documents by controlling who can make change and the types of change that can be made, as well as by removing personal and confidential information. For many people, Word is the first Office program they will use. All the Office 2013 programs share a common working environment, called the user interface, so you can apply basic techniques that you learn in Word, such as those for creating and working with files to other Office programs.

Today’s computers typically come with a hard disk that contains several billion bytes (gigabytes) of storage. A hard disk is really a set of stacked “disks” each of which, like phonograph records, has data recorded electromagnetically in concentric circles or “tracks” on the disk. A “head” (something like a phonograph arm but in a relatively fixed position) records (writes) or reads the information on the tracks. Two heads, one on each side of a disk, read or write the data as the disk spins. Each read or write operation requires that data be located, which is an operation called a “seek” (Data already in a disk cache, however, will be located more quickly.
  • 3. ICCP++ Exercise 1.2: Mechanical mouse working mechanism: Mechanical mouse is a set of transistors, ICs, resistors, photo diodes, infrared emitter, plastic rollers and a rubber ball. When you move the mouse, the rubber ball moves the two rollers between infrared emitters and photo diodes for controlling horizontal and vertical displacement. The signal is then send to mouse controller, which digitizes and sends the command to the system unit.
  • 4. ICCP++ Exercise 1.3: Optical Mouse Working Mechanism: Optical Mouse is the newest development in the mouse sometimes also called leaser mouse, because the leaser is at heart of this mouse. This mouse contains a built-in leaser instead of a heavy rubber ball. When you move this mouse the leaser emits the beam of leaser light and with the help of reflected rays it identifies the distance, direction and the speed of the move and sends the signal to the computer.

  • 8. ICCP++ CPU Types There are two primary manufacturers of computer microprocessors. Intel and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) lead the market in terms of speed and quality. Intel’s desktop CPU’s include Celeron, Pentium and Core. AMD’s desktop processors include Sempron, Athlon and Phenom. Intel makes Celeron M, Pentium M and Core mobile processors for notebooks. AMD makes mobile versions of its Sempron and Athlon, as well as the Turion mobile processor which comes in Ultra and Dual-Core versions. Both companies make both single-core and multi-core processors. 1. Features Each processor has a clock speed which is measured in gigahertz (GHz). Also, a processor has a front side bus which connects it with the system’s random access memory (RAM.) CPUs also typically have two or three levels of cache. Cache is a type of fast memory which serves as a buffer between RAM and the processor. The processor’s socket type determines the motherboard type where it can be installed transistors. 2. Functions A microprocessor is a silicon chip containing millions of microscopic this chip functions as the computer’s brain. It processes the instruction or operations contained within executable computer programs. Instead of taking instructions directly off of the hard drive, the processor takes its instructions from memory. This greatly increases the computer’s speed.
