Certainly, We have honored the Children of Adam, and
carried them over land and sea, and provided them with all
the good things, and given them an advantage over many of
those We have created with a complete preference.
In a broad sense, thus, culture refers to the symbolic and learnt behavior of man
which includes:
Elements
of
Culture
Language Customs
Values
Institutions
Practices Knowledge
MATERIAL AND NON-MATERIALASPECTS
In other words, culture has both material and non-material aspects.
Material culture refers to all those things which are made or transformed
by man while non-material culture is the ideational aspects that includes
symbols as well as ideas which shape people’s lives.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
Material culture Non-material culture
Material culture consists of
concrete and tangible
objects like tools,
Implements, furniture,
automobiles, books,
buildings, dams etc. These
concrete and tangible
objects are man-made.
Non-material culture
consists of intangible
and abstract objects. It
includes customs,
traditions, habits,
manners, attitude, beliefs,
language, literature, art,
law, religion etc.
OR
culture comprises
of philosophy, religion, and artistic achievements
while civilization refers to primarily scientific and
technical aspects which give man the control over
natural resources.
As put forward by Alfred Weber,
Civilization in this context was often seen as a
threat to culture as it produced a mass urban
society with impersonal relationships and uniform
consciousness.
