Today's earth science class covered atoms and subatomic particles. Atoms are the smallest unit of matter and are composed of protons, neutrons and electrons. The class learned about the periodic table and that the atomic number represents the number of protons in an atom's nucleus, while the atomic mass is the approximate total mass of an atom's subatomic particles. Students were assigned elements to research and present basic information about, including drawing a representation of the atom on the board. Upcoming assignments include online discussion, a multiple choice assignment, and a quiz on chemical bonds.
