Density Review Warm Up
Show your work to answer the following questions: Density = Mass / Volume
1. Complete the following data chart for density, mass, volume, and identity. Identify the
samples by using page 25 in your lab book.
Sample Mass Volume Density Identity
1 6.6 g 10 mL
2 0.0325 g 0.0013 g/mL
3 23.4 mL Cooking Oil
4 582.4 g 26 mL
5 2 kg Copper
2. Jeremy found a cave last weekend that he wanted to explore. While inside the cave,
Jeremy found a vein of minerals in the walls of the cave that looked shiny and yellowish.
First he thought it was gold. Then Jeremy remembered from his Physical Science class
that there was another mineral called pyrite that was often referred to as “fool’s gold”
that looked almost identical. How could Jeremy determine if the minerals he found
were gold or pyrite?
3. Pyrite is not very valuable compared to gold. If Jeremy’s mineral sample was 24.3 grams
and had a volume of 4.85 cm3
would you say his sample is worth a lot of money?
