Over the past 300 years, educators have consistently expressed concern about students' reliance on new technologies for writing and calculation. In 1703, teachers complained about students' dependence on slates instead of memorizing facts. In 1815 and 1907, administrators criticized the use of paper and pen/ink instead of slate and pencil. In 1929 and 1941, teachers lamented students not making their own ink or using fountain pens. In 1985, someone anonymously objected to calculator usage. However, the document concludes that while technologies change, people will always find things to complain about regarding new methods that make life easier.
