4. Barack’s Childhood In 1964 Barack's parents separated and got divorced when his father went to Harvard University with a scholarship. Barack’s father only returned to Hawaii only once to see Barack in 1971. Barack, Sr. then was in a car accident in 1982 causing him to lose both of his legs resulting in him losing his job. Then later in 1982 Barack, Sr. was in another car accident while he was traveling in Nairobi which killed him. 6. Barack’s College Years After high school Barack studied at the Occidental(preferring to the west) College in Los Angeles for two years. He then transferred to Columbia University in New York where he graduated in 1983 with a degree in political science. After Barack finished college he moved to Chicago where he started his career.

8. Barack and Michelle Meet The next year Barack met Michelle Robinson when she was assigned to be Barack’s advisor during a summer internship at Sidley and Austin law firm in Chicago. He also taught at the University of Chicago Law School and he helped organize voter registration drives in 1992 when Bill Clinton was running for president. Then on October 3, 1992 Barack and Michelle got married. After they got married they moved to Kenwood which is on Chicago’s south side. They also had two daughters: Malia, who was born in 1998, and Sasha, born in 2001.

11. Barack Becoming President In February 2007, Obama announced that he was running for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination. On November 4th, 2008, Barack Obama defeated Republican presidential nominee John McCain for the position of president of the United States. On January 20, 2009, Obama became the 44th president of the United States as a Democrat (with Joe Biden as his vice president) and the first African-American to be president. Also in 2009, Barack was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
