This was a presentation we (CIIE) prepared for a competition organized during the recent annual conference of ISBA - an Indian industry body representing business incubators, knowledge parks, and STEPs. CIIE won the first prize in the competition, which was shared with the IKP Knowledge Park, Hyderabad.

  5. 5. Incubators will start conducting more accelerators Business incubation will become portable (“startup buses” and “startup trains”), with startup studios and accelerators in exotic locations

NEW KINDS OF INCUBATORS Family business incubators (support in scaling up traditional models that have been proven) Corporate incubators by Indian corporates for supporting in- house and external innovations Incubators to support socio-political movements “Why corporates like Godrej, Mahindra, Piramal, Shriram and Infosys are backing start-ups” ---------------------- July 7, 2013 Incubators for promoting Indian culture, food & heritage incubating artists, musicians, craftsmen, and businesses based on these Social incubators will be set up with CSR funds Incubators for school students
  7. 7. NEW KINDS OF INCUBATORS (CONTD.) Accelerators and business incubators for prisoners serving time for petty crimes Skilled prisoners will provide services for new businesses ranging from manufacturing, design, accounting, business development, etc.) – laws will have to be enacted that can facilitated this. Incubators that invest in individuals as opposed to businesses Talented and motivated individuals will be identified (with special preference for economically backward individuals) – the incubators will invest in training and preparing them to create ventures of their own. Incubator for failed startups / products / technologies These incubators will buy out failed enterprises and ideas, and new entrepreneurs will be incubated who can pursue these ideas and facilitate new venture creation
  8. 8. NEW KINDS OF INCUBATORS (CONTD.) Government departments and ministries will have in-house hackathons and incubation support Reality show-based business incubators and accelerators

Incubators catering to various stages of startups (idea, proof-of-concept, prototype, seed, etc.) Collaboration between incubators to provide expertise on specific sectors/functions Technical institutions will have incubators that will provide R&D support to entrepreneurs Privately funded incubators will become profitable and grow big enough to become listed Incubators will set up structured courses to produce resources for startups (co-founders, core team members) More active support for speakers of native languages and aspiring entrepreneurs from economically backward regions Incubators will become self- sufficient and self sustaining, in terms of funding, energy and resources Links and partnerships with incubators in other developing countries (joint courses, joint incubation programmes, cross-border investments, etc.) Incubators will collaborate with schools and universities to offer credits and support for entrepreneurial activities CURRENT INCUBATORS WILL CHANGE

Stock exchange for startups - listed startups' equity shares can be traded and encashed at banks Banks will give funding to incubators to invest in startups and seek returns Crowdsourced investing (icnubators will pick companies to invest in, and general public can participate in the investment) SEED FUNDING WILL ALSO CHANGE
  11. 11. 2035 LOOKING FORWARD 1000 incubators across India 10 out of 100 VC-funded startups will have come from incubators Incubator performance will become a key parameter for ranking academic institutions 70% of CSR funds will be allocated to incubators and accelerators for various initiatives THANK YOU
