How to file a flight plan

4. Item 7 Aircraft Identification
• CAP callsign (CAP938)
• N-Number will be included in Item 18, Other information
Item 8 - Flight Rules
• I for IFR flight plans
• V for VFR flight plans
Type of Flight: G (for General Aviation)

5. Item 9
• Number
• Number of aircraft in the formation
• Leave Blank
• Type of Aircraft: C182
• Wake Turbulence: L (for aircraft type with maximum certificated weight of 15,000
pounds are less)

6. Item 10 Equipment: SG/S
• S: Standard equipment
• VHF COMM, VOR & ILS (within domestic US airspace)
• S is always the first equipment code
• G: GPS non WAAS enabled
• Z: Used to specify in Item 18 other equipment carried (ex. NAV/ SBAS [Satellite
Based Augmentation System or WAAS])
• /S: Mode S Transponder with both pressure altitude and aircraft identification
capability but no ADS-B capabilities

7. Item 13
• Departure Airdrome
• Enter 4-letter ICAO identifier (ex KSAV)
• Enter ZZZZ if the airport has no 4-letter ICAO identifier. The airport will be
identified in Item 18 (ex. Jekyll Island: DEP/09J)
• Can enter non-ICAO identifiers if filing online or with EFB Apps
Time:
• Enter the estimated 4-digit proposed departure time(Z)
• Same as entered on domestic flight plan

8. Item 15
• Cruise Speed – N followed by 4 digits (ie. N0125 for 125 kts).
• N: TAS is in Knots.
• M: Mach number (M082).
• Cruising Level – A followed by 3 digits (ex. A040 for 4,000 ft)
• A: Barometric altitudes.
• F: Flight Level (F550)
Route
• Insert route of flight using a combination of published route and/or fixes
• Use DCT when planning direct from one fix to another unless fixes are defined by
latitude/longitude

9. Item 16
• Destination Aerodrome
• Enter 4-letter ICAO identifier (ex KSAV)
• Enter ZZZZ if the airport has no 4-letter ICAO identifier. The airport will be
identified in Item 18 (ex. Jekyll Island: DEST/09J)
• Total EET: Total Estimated En route Time to the destination
• ALTN AERODROME – Not required (Mandatory internationally)
• 2ND ALTN AERODROME

10. Item 18: OTHER INFORMATION – Enter 0 (zero) for no remarks
• REG/ - The registration markings of the aircraft, if different from the aircraft
identification in Item 7 (ie. REG/N639CP)
• DEP/ - Name of airport of departure, if ZZZZ is inserted in item 13, or the 4 letter ICAO
location indicator of the location of the Air Traffic Service unit from which
supplementary flight plan data can be obtained, If AFIL is inserted in Item 13. (ex.
DEP/09J [JEKYLL ISLAND])
• DEST/ - Same format as used in DEP/
• ALTN/ - Name of alternate airport if ZZZZ is inserted in item 13.
• NAV/SBAS – Satellite Based Augmentation System (WAAS)
• Only included if code Z (Further data entry) or R (PBN) was included in Item 10
Equipment
• Not for non-WAAS aircraft or for other Performance Based Navigation capability
• STS/ - Special Handling by ATC
• STS/SAR - Flight engaged in search and rescue mission
• STS/HUM – Flight operating on a humanitarian mission
• RMK/ - Any remarks normally included in a domestic flight plan

11. Item 19
• Endurance – 4-digit group giving fuel endurance in HHMM (ie. 0500)
• Persons on Board – Total number on board (passengers and crew)
• A - Aircraft Color and Markings
• Remarks – Pertains to survival equipment only and may be left blank
• C/ – Insert name & contact information of Pilot-In-Command . Not a signature block
• Other items may be filled out at pilot’s discretion

12. Final Notes
• All preferences can be set up in EFB app (ex,
ForeFlight) & with Flight Service online by Tail
Number or Call Sign
• There is no need to fill out paper form if going
thru FSS or EFB application
• AIM 5-1-9 (International Flight Plan) guidance
is being updated – standby for more changes.

13. Performance Based Nav
• No clear guidance provided in FOM or from

G1000 system can do but each operator needs
to determine if instillation will perform up to
specifications in governing FAA Circulars

• Garmin Warnings and Cautions:
In order to determine Part 91 operational approval for the capabilities found on the Garmin Flight
Plan Information Excel File, you will need to access your AFMS, as well as the spreadsheet available
for download below. This spreadsheet contains the specific FAA documentation that outlines the
different RNAV and RNP capabilities, as well as what is required to conform to the requirements. In
most cases, familiarity or an AMFS statement is all that is needed. Some cases require a Letter of
Authorization (LOA) from the FAA. This information should be considered as a guide only, and is not
guaranteed to be complete. It is up to the operator to determine if approval is required, to seek
approval and to ensure compliance.
It should be noted that the information outlined on this page and contained in the links below
regarding compliance with various Advisory Circulars (AC) are to be used for reference only. Since
the capabilities of your avionics vary depending upon the installation, it is solely up to the aircraft
operators to determine what certifications pertain to them. These certifications are outlined in your
AFMS. Additionally, Letters of Authorization (LOA) may also be required to be in compliance with
certain operations. The information below is only intended to provide general guidance to a user to
determine the qualifications of their Garmin avionics. To the extent allowable by law, Garmin is not
liable for any damages resulting from the aircraft operator’s failure to properly file a flight plan in
the new ICAO or domestic flight plan format.
