Hydrogels are a group of hydrophilic polymeric materials that have the ability to swell but do not dissolve immediately.Hydrogels have gained attention in biomediacal applications and is gaining popularity in dental research .

4.  Hydrogels constitute a group of polymeric
materials, the hydrophilic structure of which
renders them capable of holding large
amounts of water in their three-dimensional
networks.
 Polymeric matrixes that swell but don’t
dissolve (in the short term) in water.

6.  The word “hydrogel”dates back to an article
published in 1894 (125 years ago)
 The material described there was not a
hydrogel as we describe it today; it was
indeed a colloidal gel made with inorganic
salts.

7.  The first cross-linked network material that
appeared in literature and has been described
by its typical hydrogel properties was a
polyhydroxyethylmethacrylate(pHEMA)
hydrogel .
 It was developed in 1954 by Lim et al with
the ambitious goal of using them in
permanent contact applications with human
tissues.
