You’re lazy
Are you reading this to avoid something that you actually should be doing? You can say you’re searching for inspiration, searching for ideas. Inspiration and motivation will never work unless it comes from the inside.
You think you’re smarter than you are
Just got your degree? Congratulations, but so did tens if not hundreds of thousands of people around the world. What you learnt in classroom only puts you, at best, at the same level as everyone else. “But I know graphic design/SEO/programming”, you say. So do millions of peeps around the world. Multiply all your knowledge by 10, and then you will be at the same level as tens of thousands. Not an extremely happy prospect, but that’s the reality.
Seriously, you’re not that smart
So you read several blogs about the latest trends in your industry for several hours every day. That’s all fine. However, you’re merely at Step 1 – you receive the information, most likely from people, who aggregate other information and make their insights. These people are at Step 2. Even they aren’t that important. The real stars here are the game changers – people, who set the trend, and who dictate the rules. Imagine how far down the line from there you are.

You’re a perfectionist
• You strive for the best, and don’t ever excuse yourself the
mistakes you make. To you, it’s either the best or nothing. It is
not even worth trying if you can’t do an ideal job. This is all
nice and neat, yet the problem is that you stop at the idea
level. There is no real outcome. You have great ideas, but
these ideas never materialize. Failure can hurt your ego, but
most of the improvement progress happens through it.
6. You’re comfortable with mediocrity
• This is contradictory to the last point, but one
can’t work without the other. If you force yourself
to do something, and it turns out to be okay, you
most likely never think about how to improve the
outcome. Coming back to something that you
have completed, and then searching for ways to
improve it poses a real mental challenge. That’s
why only a few people manage to improve on a
constant basis. And you’re probably not one of
them, are you?
7. What’s the take-away?
• These are typical weak points of people, and they
are all natural. We get caught up by the stream,
often at the sub-conscious level, and it is difficult
to resist. Your task is to step back and take a
critical look at where you stand. And then,
logically, proceed from there – move forward. I
am no one to teach you how to live, but
sometimes we are so much into our routines that
changing something becomes a real pain in the
butt, yet doing something significant in life
requires exactly that.
