Design is all about observation and idea
generation. It can be simple as well as
complex, it should be personal.
Everywhere I turn I see colours, textures
and patterns. I always had attraction
towards beautiful architecture of the
world, designed spaces of commercial
and residential areas where a variety of
textures, colours and styles were used. I
honed my skills later in this field and made
my career. Today I want to excel in this
field and develop not only beautiful but
functional spaces to help make dreams of
people into reality.

Introduction To:
Retail Spaces
Introduction To: Retail Spaces
Retail Is The Activity Of Selling Goods Direct To The Public, Usually In Small Quantities. If Something Is Sold Retail,
It Is Sold In Ordinary Shops Direct To The Public. Retailing Involves The Process Of Selling Consumer
Goods Or Services To Customers Through Multiple Channels Of Distribution To Earn A Profit. Retailers Satisfy
Demand Identified Through A Supply Chain. Some Of The Earliest Retailers Were Itinerant Peddlers. The Term
"Retailer" Is Typically Applied Where A Service Provider Fills The Small Orders Of A Large Number Of Individuals,
Who Are End-users. Shopping Generally Refers To The Act Of Buying Products. Sometimes This Is Done To
Obtain Final Goods, Including Necessities Such As Food And Clothing; Sometimes It Takes Place As
A Recreational Activity. Recreational Shopping Often Involves Window Shopping (Just Looking, Not Buying) And
Browsing: It Does Not Always Result In A Purchase.
Modern Retailers Typically Make A Variety Of Strategic Level Decisions Including The Type Of Store,
The Market To Be Served, The Optimal Product Assortment, Customer Service, Support Services And The Store's
Overall Market Positioning.

Retail Stores
A. Concept Store:
It Is A Place Where New Retailing Ideas Are Tested Or
Promoted For The First Time In A Specific Location. The
Site Is Usually A Key Retail Space With A High Footfall And
Sales Activities. The Aim Is To See If The New Store
Concept Achieves A Good Response From The Public
Who Would Usually Buy Into The Brand And Is New Breed
Of Customers Can Also Be Attracted. The Success Or
Failure Of The New Concept Is Judged Quite Crudely In
Sales Figure. If Sales Go Up The Concept Is A Success.
There Are Cases Where The Concept Store In A Major
Location Is Successful. But The Rollout In The Smaller
Cities May Not Work. This Is Because In Poorer Areas The
Implementation Of A Polished New Scheme May
Indicate More Expensive Level Of Product That May
Appear Unobtainable, Resulting In The Downwards Turn
In Sales For This Reason The Designers Need To Be Careful
In Understanding The Market Of A Particular Place To
Input A Concept At An Acceptable Level.
Levis Concept Store, Tokyo
B. Pop-up Store:
One Phenomenon Currently Gripping Retail Culture Is A
Pop Up Store Or Installation, Which Is A Derivative Of
Guerrilla Marketing. The Idea Is That A Store Will Appear
In A Location For A Minimum Amount Of Time. It May Be
In The Form Of A Temporary Structure Or A Space That Is
Not Usually Associated With Retail. The Venue And The
Event Is Not Advertised, Aiming The Concept For Those
Who Know About It. The Pop Up Store Concept Is
Associated With Cutting Edge And Being With The One
In Crowd: If You Don’t Know About It, You Don’t Need To
Know About It, Type Of Psychology. This Concept Is
Realised To Lift The Status Of The Different Kind Of
Product That Could Only Be Found In The Exquisite
Temporary Location.
Levis Pop-up Store, Paris, France
C. Flagship Store:
The Job Of Flagship Store Is To Promote A Brand In Large,
Key Retail Sites Around The World. The Interiors Are Often
An Extension Of That Found In A Retailers Chain Store,
But Produced To A Higher Specification And With Unique
Features That Acts As A Brands Statement. The Flagship
Stores Influences The Brand Choice Made By The
Consumer Through Creating An Exhibition Like
Experience That Is More Like A Tourist Attraction Than A
Place To Shop.
The Idea Is That The Consumer Will Visit A Flagship Store
May Or May Not Purchase Goods. But By Visiting They
Buy Into The Brand And May Shop In The Retailers‘ Other
Stores Closer To Home. The Flagship Store Is A Clever
Marketing Tool And Aims To Sub Consciously Stimulate
The Consumer Into Choosing A Particular Brand.
Levis Flagship Store, Regent Street
D. Life Style Store:
The Concept Of Life Style Store Was Derived From The
Idea That A Chain Store Could Provide A Diverse Product
Range Under One Brand. This Was Seen As Been
Aspirational For The Consumer As They Could Than Buy
Into A Whole Life Style Experience. The Life Style Store
Can Incorporate All The Retail Sectors By Offering
Fashion, Home Wear And Entertainment Departments.
The Life Style Stores Sometimes Sees The Merger Of
Diverse Retailing Such As A Bank With A Coffee Shop Or
A Sports Store With The Technology Area.
BMW Lifestyle Store
Different Retail Sectors
Retail Spaces Can Be Defined And Identified Through Different Retail Sectors, These Sectors Can Be Broadly
Described As:
Food- Evolution Of Market Into Supermarket And Speciality Food Stores,
Fashion- Clothing, Shoes, Accessories And Beauty Products.
Home- DIY Stores, Furniture, Fabrics And Cook Wear.
Leisure And Entertainment- Sports, Technology, Travel, Finance.
Each Sector Has Been Influenced Through Social, Economic Conditions, Politics, History And The Development
Of Design Processes And Also The On Growing Online Market.

3. Market Stalls 1. Premium Fashion Label
2. Boutiques
3. Mass Consumed

1. Sports
2. Technology
3. Travel
4. Finance
1. Cook Wear
2. Furniture
A. Food Retail:
Food Retail Is A Huge Industry Which Has Café, Restaurant, Coffee Shop And Supermarkets.
1. Supermarket
2. Market Halls
3. Market Stalls
1. Supermarkets:
The Rise Of Supermarkets Came Down In 1920’s. Here Product Displays Are More Like Street Market And Old
Market Halls With The Produce, Staged High, Colours Of Food And Packaging Are Mainly For Attracting Sales.
The Layout Of The Aisles Are Mainly To Push The Customer Towards A Particular Direction.
The Food Here Tends To Be Cheap And Easily Accessible And Readily Available, Do Not Depend On Seasons
To Grow. This Helps To Sustain Our Modern Lifestyle, Long Working Hours And The Move Of Women Away From
The Home Into The Working Place. Supermarkets Are Now A Destination For All Types Of Retail Coming Together
Under One Roof. It Is Very Organised And Easy To Navigate. Fruits Vegetables Are Grouped Together And
Today This Kind Of Market Is An Essential Need.
2. Market Stalls:
Theses Are Constructed From Simple Frames To Allow
Flexibility, Disassembly And Storage. Each Stall Is Like A
Little Shop With The Awning Overhead Creating An
Interior Space And Sheltering Goods From The Elements.
They Are Functional And They Allow Goods To Be
Displayed At The Table Height With Containers Of Food
Pilled High And Hanging For Textile. Here It Is The
Produce That Sells Rather Than The Design Of Display.
3. Market Halls:
The Market Halls Has Been A Re-emergence In The
Recent Years And Is Now For Tourists Destination. These
Are Places For Finding Specialist High Quality Ingredients,
Art And Craft, Textile And Fashion. The Layout Of The
Market Hall Are Base On Rows Of Permanent Shop
Accommodation Overlapping A Central Open Market
Space For Pitching Stands.
B. Fashion Retail:
Fashion Has An Important Influence On The Retail Sector. Fashion Retail Had The Birth As A Departmental Store
Concept In Britain And Later In The Year 1850 It Was Carried To Paris. In Paris Shopping Was An Experience. The
World Of Fashion Is Ever Changing, Fashion Stores Demand Interiors That Will Appeal To The Appropriate
Market. Fashion Retail Can Be Broken Down Into 3 Areas:
1. Premium Fashion Label
2. Boutiques
3. Mass Consumed Fashion Empire.
1. Premium Fashion Label:
There Are Numerous Displays In The Field Of Fashion Retail Where In From The Year 1980’s Innovative Retail
Spaces Started Up. Minimalist Stores Came To The Forefront And Those Spaces Were Very Well Crafted And
Detailed, Referred To As “White Boxes” In Which Clothing Could Be Displayed Like Pieces Of Art. Today We Can
See A Different Type Of Spaces Which Has Emerged With The Influence Of Computer Packages.
2. Boutiques:
Rise Of A Boutique As A Small Independent Retailer
Began In The Late 1950 After The Second World War.
These Revolutionary Shops In UK Was Called Bazaar And
It Was More Attractive To The Youth Culture Which Took
Place In The 1960;’s . The Interiors Over Here Are Small
And Are Individually Designed To Suit The Type Of
Clothing And Accessories. In Todays Time The Boutique
Has Become More Of A Custom Made Or A Premium
Market Place. The Clientele Today Consists Of Wealthy
And Elite.
3. Mass Consumed Fashion:
Commercial Fashion Is Dominated With Chain Stores And
They Take The References From Premium Fashion Brand In
Terms Of Clothing Collection And Interiors. They Are
Frequently Changed To Evolve With Customer
Expectation. Because Of Their High Level Of Activity The
Interior Finish In These Stores Become Easily Tiered And
Dated. The Interiors For These Spaces Should Be Designed
With Varied Materials, Lighting And Graphics To Create
An Illusion. These Spaces Have To Be Designed
Competitive In Style Because Here Price Is The Key To
Success.
1. Cook Wear:
Britain Became In The Early 1960’s A Hub For Bringing
Diverse Range Of Inexpensive Lifestyle Products To The
High Streets. The Store Named As “Habitat” Came Up In
Britain To Be Recognised For The Cook Wear Product.
The Same Concept Then Entered In Japan In The Year
1982 And Was A Huge Success.
2. Furniture:
The Biggest Innovation In Furniture Design Was In The
Year 1940 By The Swedish Designer Gillis Lundgren. This
Further Were The Concept Store Developed By IKEA. This
Idea Was Open In Sweden In 1958 To Promote Cheap
Mass Produced Furniture And Home Wear That Was
Easily Assessable. The Main Impact Was The Flat Packed
Furniture Derived By The Designer As It Become Easy To
Store And Assemble.
C. Home Retail:
D. Leisure And Entertainment Retail:
This Sector Has Grown Significantly In The Last 10 Years. An Outing To A Cinema, Museum Or Theatre Will Each
Give An Opportunity To Buy Into The Experience Through A Shop, Bar Or Café.
The Leisure Sector Includes The Following:
1. Sports: An Activity Or An Apparel
2. Technology: Audio And Gaming, Sound, Music.
3. Travel: Mode Of Transport And Travel Agency.
4. Finance: The Services Of Banks.
1. Sports:
Retail Spaces Within The Sports Sector Are Sparse In Product And Are Exhibition Like In The Way That The
Participants Moves Around The Spaces And Interacts With The Displays. The Graphic Language Is Prominent
Through Out And A Theme Demonstrating Youth And Physicality Encapsulates The Brand Message.
2. Travel:
Modes Of Transport And Travel Agency.
Example: Porsche Showroom, Leaden, Netherlands
Designer:
3. Technology:
Audio And Gaming, Sound
Example: Apple Mac Computers
4. Finance:
The Services Of Banks And Building Societies. Banks Are
Now Abandoning The High Street And Going Online.
Example: The Banks These Days Collaborated With
Coffee Shops.
Different
Store Layouts
Store Layout
People Love To Look, Window Shop And Buy. Shopping As An Experience Should Provide Fun, Which In
Turn Provide Profits. A Successful Store Or Shops is One That Is Designed To Merchandise In Addition To Looking
Good.
A Store Can Be Divided Into Two Principal Parts:
The Exterior -: Which Gives Identification, Encompasses The Store Front, Show Windows And Displays.
The Interior -: Where The Promise Of The Store Front Display Is Delivered.
Briefly Stated The Store Front Initiates The Sale And The Interior Consummates It.
There Are Two Basic Planning Guidelines For Laying Out A Retail Sales Floor:
• Use 100 Percent Of The Space Allocated.
• Do Not Sacrifice Function For Aesthetics.
Diagonal PlanVaried Plan
Geometric Plan
Straight Plan
Pathway PlanCurved Plan
Six Basic Plan Types
Straight Plan:
The straight floor plan is an excellent store
layout for most any type of retail store. It makes
use of the walls and fixtures to create small
spaces within the retail store. The straight floor
plan is one of the most economical store
designs.
Benefits: these floor plans are ideal for newer,
local businesses who may not yet have the
financial means to purchase larger stores. Still,
as the layout is so intuitive and convenient,
more popular stores Often make use of it.
Pathway Plan:
This plan is recommended for clothing stores
because of its ability to minimize the cluttered
feeling that tends to discourage disturb
shoppers who do not care to fight their way to
the racks in the back. This plan also focuses the
shoppers attention to other merchandise on
the path.
Diagonal Plan:
The diagonal floor plan is A good store layout
for self-service types of retail stores. It offers
excellent visibility for cashiers and customers.
The diagonal floor plan invites movement and
traffic flow to the retail store. This plan is more
"customer friendly.“ With this floor plan, the
customer has A more open traffic pattern.
Benefits: this layout allows you to keep a close
eye on your products, which may be useful if
you sell high-end, valuable merchandise.
Curved Plan:
curved layouts use curved and winding
displays and fixtures that require customers to
leap “from lily pad to lily pad” to find products.
This often lends A higher-end feel, and is
popular in many internationally-recognized
clothing stores.
Benefits: there is a psychology to this layout.
Not seeing rows and rows of stock subliminally
encourages customers to “buy now” – it’s ideal
for retailers with higher-priced items.
Varied Plan:
For products that require back-up
merchandise to be immediately adjacent for
example shoes and men's shirts, the varied
plan is highly functional. It is the variation of
the straight line plan with sufficient square
footage allowed for box or carton storage off
the main sales floor with perimeter wall
stocking.
Geometric Plan:
The geometric floor plan is A suitable store
design for clothing and apparel shops. It uses
racks and fixtures to create an interesting and
out-of-the-ordinary type of store design without
A high cost.
Benefits: you can more easily direct the
customer toward a certain product. You can
use this layout to your benefit as you can either
target high-end price points, or direct
customers to sale merchandise you need to
move quickly.
Merchandising Psychology: Arousing Interest And Satisfying It
This Can Be Accomplished By
Means Of Advertising, Prices,
Show Window Displays Or
New Or Remodelled Quarters,
Which Occupies Much Of A
Merchants Efforts. Of These,
Storefronts And Display
Windows Are Important To
The Store Designer.
Show Windows , In Addition To
Attracting Passer-by, Should
Induce Them To Enter The Store.
Door Locations Require Study In
Relation To Pedestrian Traffic
Flow, Grades Of Sidewalks And
Store Floors And Interior Layout
Of The Shop.
Organising Stores Space And
Consequently The
Merchandise To Be Sold, Into
Departments Enable
Customers To Find Objects

From Various Types Of Goods.
Interior Displays Require
Particular Attention In Speciality
Shops. Types Range From
Displays Of Staple Goods,
Which Assist Customers In
Selection, To Display Of
Accessories, Which The Sale Of
Staples May Suggest To The
Customer.

Arena Principle
This Display Technique Ensures That The Entire Product Range Is Visible From The Front Mid-floor Area Close To
The Entrance, Right Through To The Back Wall. The Customer’s Field Of Vision Is Structured In to Different Layers
Within The Store Interior–From The Front/Low Area (Mid-floor) To The Back/Ceiling Height Area (Back Wall).
Displays According To The Arena Principle Can Be Used In Shop-in-shops, Large Stores And In Department
Stores. If The Arena Principle Is Respected, The Customer Can Spot The Product Ranges Displayed On The Each
Of The Merchandise Supports Right Through To Those On The Back Walls, From The Main Pathway. It Gives The
Customer A Good Overview And Draws Him Into The Store.
Layers Within The Store Interior:
Height Of Furniture Directly Next To The Main Pathway: 1.00 To1.20 Metres
Height Of Furniture In The Centre: 1.40 To 1.60 Metres
Back Wall Elements: Up To 2.60 Metres In Height
Table Displays And Tiered Tables Are Ideal For Displaying Folded And Standing Items At The Front Of The Store.
People Generally Find Tables Very Inviting And They Serve As A Focal Attraction For Assorted Product Displays
And Decorative Elements. Stands And Gondolas For Hanging And, In Some Cases, Folded Merchandise Are
Used In The Centre Of The Store.
In Addition To Tables, Stands And Gondolas Can Also Be Selectively Used For Promotional Displays.
Exposing The
Customer To The
Maximum Amount Of
Merchandise
Avoid Monotony In
Circulation And Display
Of Merchandise
Do Not Hesitate To Be
Bold Or Even
Shocking. This
Stimulates The
Customer And Their
Urge To Buy.
Flexibility So That
Departments And
Fixtures Can Be
Moved Or Modified
Do Not Design
Fixtures Too High Or
Stoop Low
The Successful Retail Store Is
An Efficient Selling Machine
Or Sales Factory.
While Designing Store
Interiors Remember These
Points:
Merchandise And
Space Must Be
Organised To Help The
Customer In Making A
Selection And To Help
The Salesperson In
Selling
Avoid Monotony

MINIMALIST is the Style that is have taken for designing my store layout. White happens to be the main colour
for this style. I have used white as the basis for walls, furniture, floor and also for ceiling. I have taken white as my
base colour or the colour for the background so that the merchandise in popping colours could be
highlighted. Using minimalist style and white colour I have kept the design seamless.
Minimalist is the combination of simplicity, sophistication, beauty and practicalness. It allows expressing yourself
without any screaming accessories. I wanted simplicity and strictness in my design that’s the reason why is
chosen Minimalist Style.
The Mood that I have taken for designing the retail store is SERENITY. I have chosen Serenity as the mood
because I wanted my design to be Calm, Peaceful and Untroubled.

The layout deals with the sectional elevation of one of the wall of the store. The wall comprises of a display unit and a cash
and wrap counter. All the planning has been done as per human anthropometrics and by following certain rules of the
retail space design. The merchandise has been kept maximum at eye level which is 5’ from ground level above that
branding is done using posters. As it is an store of emerging brand so I have kept the merchandise on the display minimum
which shows opulence and luxury, giving importance to each merchandise using highlighters and spot lights. I have taken
white background so as to highlight the merchandise i.e. The foreground.

The layout deals with the sectional elevation of one of the wall of the store. The wall comprises of a display unit and an
opening leading towards the space provided for changing window display. All the planning has been done as per human
anthropometrics and by following certain rules of the retail space design. The merchandise has been kept maximum at
eye level which is 5’ from ground level above that branding is done using posters. Polystyrene hand is taken for displaying
merchandise. Through this I wanted to showcase the delicacy of the product.
As it is an store of emerging brand so I have kept the merchandise on the display minimum which shows opulence and
luxury, giving importance to each merchandise using highlighters and spot lights. I have taken white background so as to
highlight the merchandise i.e. The foreground.

  • 10. Introduction To: Retail Spaces Retail Is The Activity Of Selling Goods Direct To The Public, Usually In Small Quantities. If Something Is Sold Retail, It Is Sold In Ordinary Shops Direct To The Public. Retailing Involves The Process Of Selling Consumer Goods Or Services To Customers Through Multiple Channels Of Distribution To Earn A Profit. Retailers Satisfy Demand Identified Through A Supply Chain. Some Of The Earliest Retailers Were Itinerant Peddlers. The Term "Retailer" Is Typically Applied Where A Service Provider Fills The Small Orders Of A Large Number Of Individuals, Who Are End-users. Shopping Generally Refers To The Act Of Buying Products. Sometimes This Is Done To Obtain Final Goods, Including Necessities Such As Food And Clothing; Sometimes It Takes Place As A Recreational Activity. Recreational Shopping Often Involves Window Shopping (Just Looking, Not Buying) And Browsing: It Does Not Always Result In A Purchase. Modern Retailers Typically Make A Variety Of Strategic Level Decisions Including The Type Of Store, The Market To Be Served, The Optimal Product Assortment, Customer Service, Support Services And The Store's Overall Market Positioning. • 11. A. Concept Store: It Is A Place Where New Retailing Ideas Are Tested Or Promoted For The First Time In A Specific Location. The Site Is Usually A Key Retail Space With A High Footfall And Sales Activities. The Aim Is To See If The New Store Concept Achieves A Good Response From The Public Who Would Usually Buy Into The Brand And Is New Breed Of Customers Can Also Be Attracted. The Success Or Failure Of The New Concept Is Judged Quite Crudely In Sales Figure. If Sales Go Up The Concept Is A Success. There Are Cases Where The Concept Store In A Major Location Is Successful. But The Rollout In The Smaller Cities May Not Work. This Is Because In Poorer Areas The Implementation Of A Polished New Scheme May Indicate More Expensive Level Of Product That May Appear Unobtainable, Resulting In The Downwards Turn In Sales For This Reason The Designers Need To Be Careful In Understanding The Market Of A Particular Place To Input A Concept At An Acceptable Level. Levis Concept Store, Tokyo
  • 12. B. Pop-up Store: One Phenomenon Currently Gripping Retail Culture Is A Pop Up Store Or Installation, Which Is A Derivative Of Guerrilla Marketing. The Idea Is That A Store Will Appear In A Location For A Minimum Amount Of Time. It May Be In The Form Of A Temporary Structure Or A Space That Is Not Usually Associated With Retail. The Venue And The Event Is Not Advertised, Aiming The Concept For Those Who Know About It. The straight floor plan is one of the most economical store designs. Benefits: these floor plans are ideal for newer, local businesses who may not yet have the financial means to purchase larger stores. Still, as the layout is so intuitive and convenient, more popular stores Often make use of it. Pathway Plan: This plan is recommended for clothing stores because of its ability to minimize the cluttered feeling that tends to discourage disturb shoppers who do not care to fight their way to the racks in the back. This plan also focuses the shoppers attention to other merchandise on the path. Diagonal Plan: The diagonal floor plan is A good store layout for self-service types of retail stores. It offers excellent visibility for cashiers and customers. The diagonal floor plan invites movement and traffic flow to the retail store. This plan is more "customer friendly.“ With this floor plan, the customer has A more open traffic pattern. Benefits: this layout allows you to keep a close eye on your products, which may be useful if you sell high-end, valuable merchandise. Curved Plan: curved layouts use curved and winding displays and fixtures that require customers to leap “from lily pad to lily pad” to find products. This often lends A higher-end feel, and is popular in many internationally-recognized clothing stores. Benefits: there is a psychology to this layout. Not seeing rows and rows of stock subliminally encourages customers to “buy now” – it’s ideal for retailers with higher-priced items. Varied Plan: For products that require back-up merchandise to be immediately adjacent for example shoes and men's shirts, the varied plan is highly functional. It is the variation of the straight line plan with sufficient square footage allowed for box or carton storage off the main sales floor with perimeter wall stocking. Geometric Plan: The geometric floor plan is A suitable store design for clothing and apparel shops. It uses racks and fixtures to create an interesting and out-of-the-ordinary type of store design without A high cost. Benefits: you can more easily direct the customer toward a certain product. You can use this layout to your benefit as you can either target high-end price points, or direct customers to sale merchandise you need to move quickly.
