Tips for Safety Signage:
10 tips for finding the right safety
      signs for your business
Most companies can benefit from
    the use of safety signs.

 Reduce workplace accidents
Avoid potential fines from OSHA & others
Keep workplace free of clutter and other hazards
- ---
     -
Sometimes though, knowing what
signs are needed and where to find
       them can be difficult...

              -
                      X
                 --
These 10 Tips will help make the job
easier when creating safer areas in
           your facility.
1. Identify areas that may need safety signs.

This means auditing your facility for
               all hazards and potential dangers.

(Be sure to consider areas that are used by
               both employees and visitors.)
1. Identify areas... (continued)

                    Common potential hazards include:

                    • Machinery • Hazardous waste
                    • Electrical panels areas
                    • Aisles • Potentially slippery
                    • Forklift zones surface areas
2. Pinpoint potential safety hazards

Determine what the hazards could be.
               For example:

Dangerous fluids could result in potential
               hazardous spills.
Fluids could also create ‘slip and fall’ hazards.
3. Determine what message to convey.

Match the message on your signage
to the danger posed by the hazard.

It is ideal to convey a short, clear message.
4. Consider the signage placement.

Post signs where they can be easily
              seen. Location is very important.
              • Do not post signs near visually cluttered
                areas

              • The sign needs to warn BEFORE the
                danger area is reached
5. Determine sign type, color, size & shape.

Ask yourself- What type of sign best
               suits the area and message?
... Wall sign? Floor sign? Standing sign?

               For example:
A safety goggles reminder- Place at eye level
6. Understanding OSHA warning messages.
OSHA recommends using these stylized headers in the following scenarios:

: Imminent danger of serious injury or death

: Potential danger of serious injury or death

                          : Potential danger of injury

                          : Important, but non-hazardous information
7. Locate a reputable signage provider.

Not all sign companies are the same.
               You may want to consider:
               • Printed sign durability and longevity?
               • Sign customization possibilities?
               • Positive customer feedback?
               • Their understanding of safety signage?
8. Clearly communicate your needs.

Once you find a company to work with, communicate
your needs and expectations clearly, and document it!

Representatives from companies that are familiar with
safety signage will likely understand the needs of your
facility and will be able to make helpful recommendations
to ensure all safety needs are being properly met.
9. Post signs in easy-to-see locations.

Once your signs arrive- post them in
               clear view.
               • Place them in such a way that they can’t
                 be overlooked or missed.
               • Ask others on your team if they notice them
                 easily.
10. Monitor your signage often.

               • Keep your signs clean and highly visible.

               • Are your signs holding up to physical
demands? If not seek alternative and
                 more durable solutions.

               • Do they need relocating for better visibility
                 or awareness?
