The document discusses emotional intelligence (EQ) and its importance for leadership. It defines EQ as the ability to understand one's own and other people's emotions. While IQ peaks at a young age, EQ can be improved into one's 50s through coaching. The coaching program uses an Emotional Capital model that assesses 10 competencies shown to be important for leadership. Improving EQ benefits not only individuals but also their relationships and interactions with others.

Leadership Coaching to improve Emotional Capital
What is Emotional Intelligence?
Emotional Intelligence is the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emotions, to
discriminate among them and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and actions.
The term was initially developed by psychologists John Meyer, of the University of New Hampshire,
and Peter Salovey, of Yale University. However, Israeli psychologist Reuven Bar-On had worked
independently on a concept he called ‘emotional quotient’ and first coined the term ‘EQ’ in the early
1980s. The idea was popularised in 1995 by American journalist Daniel Goleman who wrote the first
best-selling book on the subject, “Emotional Intelligence – why it can matter more than IQ”.
Why is EQ important in business?
To be really effective in business today we need to work with a
new balance sheet, one that goes beyond the traditional balance
sheet which has the financial, physical and intellectual assets, to “Research shows convincingly

Coaching with an Emotional Intelligence Framework
Research shows that EQ more than IQ determines leadership success. However, unlike IQ, which is
generally peaks at around 17 years of age and then remains reasonably level, EQ increases with age
up to around 50 and can be developed and improved at any age. Leadership is not just the domain
of the boss at the very top of an organisation. Developing leadership skills and emotional capital is
required at all levels within an organisation.
We provide leadership coaching based around the Emotional Capital model of Emotional
Intelligence. We use a psychometric assessment to kick start the process of working with individuals
to develop their emotional intelligence, helping them to make full use of their signature strengths
and identifying development opportunities across other competences.
