What does AI mean? What exists and what is hype? Educators won't be replaced by machines, but are crucial in the future of young people. The author of the new ISTE book: "Teaching AI: Exploring New Frontiers for Learning" will answer questions and provide some unexpected twists along the way. When people still have difficulty in agreeing on a definition for human intelligence, it is reasonable that there is also difficulty in defining what counts as artificial intelligence or what it would mean for a machine to replicate human intelligence. This session helps educators continue to be LEARNERS (1c) by staying current with research that supports student learning outcomes, including from the Learning Sciences. Understanding a Socio-cultural perspective and the importance of how humans learn from and in the presence of other humans is crucial to a discussion on AI, because AI will go as far as the humans who train machines to think. In learning and staying current, this session challenges educators to re-think learning DESIGN (5c) that leverages strengths our human brain has that machines can't do well, and builds in ways for students to leverage what machines can do more efficiently than we can. These help us to create GLOBAL COLLABORATORS where our students use technologies to work with others, including peers, experts or community members, to examine issues and problems from multiple viewpoints. This one-hour exploratory session will walk though the sections of the book, "Teaching AI: Exploring New Frontiers for Learning" with quick tips and access to free resources supported by AI or helping students prepare for a future with AI ranging from Sesame Workshop to PBS Learning Media with the Crash Course Series for young children though college students, Project-based learning and Design Thinking to Diversity in STEM. It will also include free tools you can use in you classroom right away for creative collaborative projects and assessments. These tools will be used during the City Walk and in the workshop following as my team guides you in ways to bring in socio-cultural perspectives and the importance of humanity while preparing for a future with AI.
