Is it possible to make a typical Dutch 1960's terrace house, a
'doorzonwoning' energy neutral?
This project investigates the potential for energy savings in
the masses of post WWII houses built throughout the
country. By upgrading the whole building envelope,
introducing mechanical ventilating with heat recovery and
installing a heat pump and pv solar panels the limits of what
is possible are being pushed.
Ths project is being followed by the Dutch television channel
RTL4 program "Ons Huis Verdient Het".

‘Matrouska’ / Appartment Interior
Amsterdam / NL / 2014 / Design
Designed for a new build project on the edge of central
Amsterdam, this apartment was for a mother close to
retirement and her daughter living overseas who wanted a
pied-a-terre in The Netherlands.
The apartment was to work as a single space that could,
when required, be divided into two independent living units.
The long lines of the apartment were accentuated by placing
a hall along the facade and another in the middle of the plan
creating a circular routing. The entrance hall doubles as a
gallery for a collection of graphic art.

4. A young couple had bought a large town house and were
not sure what was possible with it.
With this quick feasability study the building was analysed
and 3 proposals were made:
1) Live in the whole house with living room at rear
2) Live in the whole house with dining room at rear
3) Create a groud floor appartment for expats and live on
the upper floors

5. Why is it that the best room of a party is always the kitchen?
The owners of this house loved their neighbourhood, but not
their isolated little kitchen. Rather than move house they
decided to go for a radical renovation of the ground floor.
By mirroring the plan, the kitchen and dining room combined
to create a large space for social gatherings. Not wanting to
cut off the living room, a glass cabinet (displaying family
heirlooms) sits between the two rooms allowing light and
sight lines to flow back and forth. A conservatory enlarges
the living room while embracing the garden.

6. ‘Silent Disco’ / Student Union
The Hague / NL / 2011 / Realised
In early 2011, Student Union “Pallas Athene” had the
opportunity to rent a former restaurant as their society.
With all building work carried out by students, a simple
design was conceived that was also very durable. A complete
acoustic cage was built in the space, allowing parties to be
held without disturbing the upstairs neighbours.
To counter the effect of a long, narrow space, the rear wall
was covered with bold horizontal lines in the colours of all
the clubs. Bar tables can be folded out from the paneling.
7. ‘Love Thy Neighbour’ / Roof Terrace
The Hague / NL / 2011 / Realised
The apartment is situated on the upper three floors of a
townhouse above the storage rooms of the local bakery.
In order to completely cover the roof with the terrace
permission was necessary from all 10 neighbours.
In order to protect the privacy of both user and neighbours,
the terrace is surrounded by planters that act both as
balustrades and green privacy screens. In this way, when
the bamboo is matured, the terrace will be surrounded by a
2m high hedge.

8. ‘Right & Wrong’ / Kitchen & Bathroom Renovation
The Hague / NL / 2010 / Realised
When a young family bought this house, they found all the right things were in the
wrong places. A previous renovation had created an efficient but introverted kitchen,
and a bathroom that was only accessible through the main bedroom.
By turning the toilet on the 1st floor by 90°, otherwise wasted hall space could be
used to create a niche in the kitchen to house the family sized fridge and oven. Social
interaction between the kitchen and the rest of the living spaces was realised by
opening up the kitchen and placing a bar that hides the mess from the dining space.
In the bathroom, all elements were placed against one wall to create an open,
spacious and efficient space.

9. ‘Hidden potential’ / House Renovation
The Hague / NL / 2010 / Realised
An family with two teenage children bought this monumental
18th century house that had previously been renovated for
a childless couple.
With only two bedrooms & fragmented ground floor, it was
not practical for a family looking to entertain while also
having their own spaces to retreat into. This study showed
the potential for the house to be renovated so that the social
spaces on the ground floor became united & both children
would have their own bedroom. By removing the false ceiling
on the 2nd floor, both bedrooms became lofts.N

‘Standing Room Only’ / Bungalow Extension
Noordwijkerhout / NL / 2010 / Realised
Located in the Sollasi holiday park, this bungalow was bought by
a family looking for a sea-side getaway.
In order to increase the amount of usable floor space in the main
bedroom, a dormer window was added that mirrored the original
dormer window.
With only half the dormer situated in the bedroom, the window in
the other half allowed light to penetrate deep into the bungalow
via the double height living room.

11. ‘Clean Slate’ / House Renovation
The Hague / NL / 2009 / Realised
Located in the desirable Statenkwartier neighbourhood,
this house had been rented out as three apartments
since the 1980’s. Tired, worn out and not taken care of,
it was time for a new beginning.
As one of the few houses in the neighbourhood missing
essentially all original interior details, it allowed ideas to
develop from a clean slate. Only the exterior walls would
remain unchanged.
On the ground floor the kitchen becomes the beating
heart of the home, with all spaces visually connected to
it. The first floor becomes an oasis of tranquility for the
owners, with their master bedroom connecting through
to the bathroom via a walk through wardrobe. A guest
room / library / study is created along with a hobby room.
The upper floor becomes the domain of the children, with
two bedrooms, a large play space flooded with daylight
and a bathroom.
As a response to a predominately shady rear garden, a
large roof terrace is created with panoramic views over
the sea and the city.

‘Just a Tweak’ / House Renovation
Voorschoten / NL / 2009 / Realised
Sometimes large interventions are needed in order to make a house work in the 21st century - but not
always. This 1930’s house, that had not been adjusted since being built, needed just a few small tweaks
in order to bring it up to date for a conservative client.
On the ground floor, the living spaces and kitchen were expanded by 2,5m in order to create a usable
kitchen and a larger living space. These spaces are treated as an invisible addition to the house, avoiding
the typical Dutch ‘greenhouse’ conservatory addition and giving the feel that they always belonged to
the house. The bathroom on the first floor, nothing more than a sink, was moved to a larger room on the
street side of the house. This gave the owner a baby room overlooking the 35m deep garden.
The most important intervention is the removal of the original staircase and the creation of a new staircase
to the attic. This created not only larger rooms on the first floor, but allowed the attic to become much
more functional. A guest room, study, bathroom and laundry are flooded with light via new roof lights in
the 4.5m high space.1:200 +2

13. ‘1+1=1’ / Double Apartment Conversion
Amsterdam / NL / 2007 / Realised
This apartment is located in the Staatsliedenbuurt, an up and coming
neighbourhood west of the centre. The client, a young musical couple wanted
to convert two apartments into a single home that provided a large social
space, while also creating a sound proof rehearsal space.
By placing all services on the left side of the floor plan, in line with the access
to above apartments, a maximum amount of floor space was cleared for living
space. On the ground floor, the rehearsal room (1) is placed next to the front
door in order to minimise the distance that instruments have to be carried.
To the rear, a bedroom (2) and study / future bedroom (3) open onto a small
courtyard.
On the upper floor, a long living space (4) is created spanning from front to rear
facade, with double doors opening onto a balcony overlooking the courtyard.

14. ‘Growing Up’ / Ground Floor Renovation
Voorschoten / NL / 2007 / Study
The client, a family with two teenage sons, had out
grown the social spaces of their 1930’s home. As they
had no desire to move out of the neighbourhood, they
decided to adapt their house to their needs.
Extending by 2.5m to the rear of the house allowed
a more balanced layout of space and a re-routing of
circulation without applying for building permission.
Access to the balcony space above the extension is
retained, while a skylight strip lights the kitchen & dining
area. The same flooring stretches from front facade to
rear terrace, creating one long living space that becomes
part of the garden when the rear facade is folded away.

15. ‘Out of the Shell’ / Ground Floor Renovation
Almere / NL / 2007 / Study
Almere is a satellite town of Amsterdam, founded in the late 1970’s. While originally conceived as a
polynuclear city, it is now a continuous urban conglomeration and the fastest growing town in The
Netherlands. This house is situated in one of the new developments that filled the gaps in the 1990’s.
The client, a young family, wanted to optimise the ground floor of their home and create more interaction
between the front and rear spaces. By moving the kitchen to the front of the house, this allowed the
heavy core that split the space to be eroded.
The kitchen was made more social by facing it towards the living and dining spaces. Windows between
the kitchen and entrance hall brought daylight into this previously dark space. By breaking open the space
under the stairs, a visual link from front to back was created, while also providing a central workspace for
the family computer.
The door to the garden was moved in order to concentrate circulation spaces to one side of the room.

16. ‘Graduation Studios’ / Conversion of a Student House
Leiden / NL / 2005 / Realised
Leiden is home of the oldest university in The Netherlands and has a huge
student population. While there is always a shortage of room for students,
the situation for recent graduates is even worse.
As a response to this situation, the client decided to convert a monumental
student house into independent studios for recent graduates. Each room is
fitted out with a small kitchen block, toilet & shower.
Due to the height of the ceilings, the rooms on the ground and first floor
have a built in mezzanine sleeping area. In this way the volume of the room
is utilised to its maximum potential, freeing up precious floor space.
On the upper floor the former dropped ceiling has been removed in order
to expose the beams of the saddle roof.

17. ‘The Triangle and The Rectangle’ / House renovation
Rijswijk / NL / 2005 / Realised
This house is located in a 1920’s neighbourhood with, for Dutch standards, large terrace housing. Being the
last house on the row, it deviates from the standard Dutch ‘front room / back room’ typology due to the
addition of a parasitic triangle. This triangle (a result of the urban situation) creates a spatial tension.
The client, a young family with two daughters, desired a home that would allow for entertaining, while also
allowing each family member to retreat into their own private space. The possibility to provide space for a
future home based physiotherapy practice was also required.
On the ground floor, the kitchen (1) and living spaces (2) are joined by a wide full height opening that allows
not only sunlight to enter the kitchen, but connects the kitchen an spatially to the living zones.
On the first floor, a new bathroom (3) occupies the intersection of the triangle and rectangle. In the master
bedroom (4) a small en-suite bathroom fits under the stair to the upper floor. A study / practice room (5)
occupies the corner of the triangle
On the second floor, the dropped ceiling was removed and a mezzanine sleeping area created. In order to
create two bedrooms of equal size, the smaller room (6) has a large mezzanine that extends over the hall.+2

‘I See the Light’ / Crossroads International Church Ministry Centre
Amstelveen / NL / 2003 / Realised
Brief: 8 work stations (1) / music rehearsal studio (2) / conference room (3) / multi usage
space (4) / kitchen (5) / counselling space with a separate entrance (6).
With the main entrance bringing visitors into a central hall, a glass wall was created to
bring daylight into this previously artificially lit space. The program was split so that the
more social functions were placed on the upper floor, with the majority of the office space
and the counselling placed on the lower level. In this way, the counselling space could
make use of the existing entrance on the lower level. A bookshelf wall spans the lower
level in order to make the space feel wider.
On the upper floor the rehearsal studio was placed near the entrance in order to minimise
both the distance musicians have to carry their equipment, and the distraction to other
users. The multi usage space is linked to the conference room by a folding wall. In this
way, the space can be combined when catering for larger social activities.
