It’s time to bring back the true meaning of “The Brotherhood”. Together, we can make the thin blue line stronger!
The Police Officers Brotherhood
Lays The Foundation For Prader-Willi Syndrome Awareness Month
On Friday April 22nd, 2016 the Police Officers Brotherhood
held its Annual Spring Cocktail Reception and Cigar Smoke
Out at the Castle in Roselle Park co-hosted by
Assemblywoman Annette Quijano, to help 5 law
enforcement recipients and their families in need or crises.
New Jersey State Police Trooper- Brian Kerrigan was one
of the recipients due to his daughter’s battle with Prader-Willi
Syndrome a rare genetic disorder. Trooper Kerrigan explained
since this disorder is so rare there is not much awareness or
funding to research a cure. Due to this event, Assemblywoman
Quijano, was so surprised at the lack of support for this
disease, she sponsored Bill “AJR 111”
State Trooper Brian Kerrigan’s Daughter Ciara
arrived with something wrong. She failed to cry,
wasn’t breathing, and was limp. The delivery room
immediately turned from a scene of happiness and
joy, to a critical life threatening situation in the matter
of seconds. Brian instinctively wanted to push the
nurses aside and somehow breath life into her but
he had to maintain his composure. From that day
forward his life was forever changed and he vowed
to protect her under any circumstance.
Genetic testing eventually revealed she had a very
rare genetic disorder known as Prader-Willi
Syndrome (PWS) characterized by sever hypotonia
in infants, and excessive eating in early childhood
gradually developing into morbid obesity. she
currently takes thyroid medicine and growth
hormones daily. To read more about Ciara please
see our program book.

Shortly there after, Trooper Kerrigan posted the following
message on his Facebook. “I am very happy to announce that
a Bill that designates May of each year as "Prader-Willi
Syndrome Awareness Month" in New Jersey has been
introduced in the assembly. AJR 111. This was sponsored by
Assemblywoman Annette Quijano and Assemblyman Jay
Webber. Please help us out and take a moment to express to
your senators and assembly members in your district the
importance of this Bill for promoting Prader-Willi Syndrome
awareness in NJ and for our future fundraising events. We still
have a long way to go and will need a senator to sponsor a
companion bill in the Senate to get this signed into law. Thank
you Wayne Blanchard and the NJ Law Enforcement Police
Officer's Brotherhood for your support and laying the
foundation for this to happen.”
The Police Officers Brotherhood would like to thank
Assemblywoman Quijano and Assemblyman Webber for their
quick response introducing this legislation to help us pave the
way in curing this rare genetic disorder.
The POB is schedule to give a donation to Trooper Kerrigan
for Ciara in the amount of $4,000 at our upcoming fundraiser
of 10-7-2016 at D’Jai’s in Belmar. We hope to raise more funds
for Ciara at our upcoming event. Please come join us.
Testifying in Support of "Prader-Willi Syndrome
Awareness Month"
- Passes Assembly Health Committee 12-0
“This week, I met with NJ State Trooper Brian Kerrigan and
his daughter Ciara at the State House as they testified in
support of my resolution designating May of each year as
"Prader-Willi Syndrome Awareness Month" in New Jersey.
This will help Brian and families like his bring attention and
raise much-needed funding on this important issue. Thank you
to Wayne Blanchard, STFA Vice President for Legislation for
joining us in support!” Wrote Assemblywoman Quijano.
