Earth Norway
4. Background..
SPARE is an International Environmental
Education school project model initiated and
coordinated by Naturvernforbundet since 1996.
SPARE Africa-Kenya entails training of teachers
and teaching in primary schools with long
accumulation of knowledge and development of
attitudes about climate change, energy and
sustainable development.
5. SPARE is currently actively implemented in 13
countries with more than 300,000 pupils and
6,000 schools in Eastern Europe, Caucasus,
Africa and Central Asia.
It contributes to increased environmental
dissemination of information and green
activities in the local communities.
6. Planned activities
1. Trainings and teachings;
The training of teachers is a central component. SPARE Africa- Kenya facilitates
trainings of schoolteachers from the counties selected.
2. The SPARE educational material;
The project adopts the SPARE International educational material
(schoolbook). By revising, translating, printing and dissemination of
SPARE educational materials to selected schools. The focus will be on formal
education.
3. Community outreach program;
As a means of disseminating information about climate change and
sustainable development in homes and communities, SPARE Africa-Kenya
Project will hold various workshops and organize information training to
communities, representatives from county governments on modest
adaptation and mitigation techniques.
4. Activities for school children;
The project will facilitate the implementation of simple symposiums organized for
the school children, creative contests, tree planting and practical displays of
energy efficiency technologies in schools and homes

10. Why is the project important?
Teachers are valued and viewed as resourceful persons in the
society.
Utilization of the trained teachers as a communication tool on energy
efficiency, climate change and sustainable environment, will lead to vast
dissemination of these information to pupils and local communities on
the climate change issues sparking debates towards sustainable
development solutions.
Engaging and empowering children with relevant information on
energy education and climate change in a child-friendly school
environment helps them learn environmental contribution to development
at an early age. A positive attitude will be instilled at a young age thus
creating a long-term solution making them environmental ambassadors,
heroes and powerful agents of change.
11. Proposed outcomes
Young Pupils will understand their role, which is very pivotal in the
environmentalism.
They will also develop necessary skills, exploit
their unique talents and strengths that they will use in their day to day
activities and most importantly they will develop a character of having
collective responsibility of the environment.
>They will act as source of change in their homes by
disseminating information about climate change, sustainable energy, the
use of alternative measures making their parents, guardians and
communities mitigate.
