9. ELEMENTS OF
DANCE
There are three elements
of dance:
Space: Area surrounding
a person in which he/she
is able to move.
Time: The duration of
the movement.
Force: How the body
uses energy while
moving.
10. SPACE
Shape: Circles, squares, triangles, etc. made with parts
of the body, whole body, with the groups or by moving
though space.
Level: The vertical distance from the floor (High,
Medium, Low).
Direction: Where the body moves (forward, backward,
down, sideways, diagonally).
Pathways: Tracing the patterns in the air with the arms,
or on the floor by moving body.
Focus: Where the dancer’s eyes look as he/she
dances.
Size: Large and small movements.
11. TIME
Pulse: The ongoing underlying beat.
Tempo: How fast or slow the movements.
Accent: Strong beats that usually occur at
regular intervals.
Rhythm: The word has same meaning as
in music. Patterns made by arranging long
and short movements on rhythm of music
(strong and light sounds).
Duration: The length of time the movement
lasts.
12. FORCE
Heavy/Light: More Energy/Less Energy
Bound/Flowing: Releasing energy in a
controlled, restrained manner/ releasing
energy freely
