Éditorial : Making a commitment
Right from the start, our organization has worked to foster healthy lifestyle habits, mainly by creating
environments that promote healthy eating habits and a physically active lifestyle. With our multisector
approach, we hope to reach young people between the ages of 0 and 17 and their parents, and especially the
disadvantaged segment of the population.
Our approach is the same throughout the MRC when dealing with health facilities, schools, child-care services,
and with community and municipal institutions.
Although our mandate is well-known (by readers of our newsletter, at least), it must be noted that steps to
increase awareness are being taken by other committees, in other regions, and in other sectors.
The entire population needs to be made aware of the types of behaviour that promote healthy eating habits and a
physically active lifestyle.
Because we’re all concerned in one way or another, professionally and/or personally, the responsibility to
“promote” this message cannot be left to just a few organizations. It’s up to everyone, in his or her own capacity,
to inform others about healthy lifestyle habits.
Increasing awareness can be as simple as inviting people to join social media, such as ours, or sharing this
newsletter with friends and family, or even just spreading the word.
The purpose of this special editorial is to encourage you to get involved. One way is by making a commitment
to share with a growing number of people whatever links or knowledge you might have when it comes to
adopting healthy lifestyle habits.
This responsibility must become a multisector and collective project. Each and everyone one of us must make an
effort to spread the word in order to help decision makers adopt projects aimed at ensuring everyone’s well
being.
So, spread the word!

MeM Partners Newsletter june 2013

  • 1. M E M P R É E N M O U V E M E N T MeM Partners Newsletter , june 2013 1 Éditorial : Making a commitment Right from the start, our organization has worked to foster healthy lifestyle habits, mainly by creating environments that promote healthy eating habits and a physically active lifestyle. With our multisector approach, we hope to reach young people between the ages of 0 and 17 and their parents, and especially the disadvantaged segment of the population. Our approach is the same throughout the MRC when dealing with health facilities, schools, child-care services, and with community and municipal institutions. Although our mandate is well-known (by readers of our newsletter, at least), it must be noted that steps to increase awareness are being taken by other committees, in other regions, and in other sectors. The entire population needs to be made aware of the types of behaviour that promote healthy eating habits and a physically active lifestyle. Because we’re all concerned in one way or another, professionally and/or personally, the responsibility to “promote” this message cannot be left to just a few organizations. It’s up to everyone, in his or her own capacity, to inform others about healthy lifestyle habits. Increasing awareness can be as simple as inviting people to join social media, such as ours, or sharing this newsletter with friends and family, or even just spreading the word. The purpose of this special editorial is to encourage you to get involved. One way is by making a commitment to share with a growing number of people whatever links or knowledge you might have when it comes to adopting healthy lifestyle habits. This responsibility must become a multisector and collective project. Each and everyone one of us must make an effort to spread the word in order to help decision makers adopt projects aimed at ensuring everyone’s well being. So, spread the word! Denis Delbois Issue°14- June 2013 Partners Newsletter
  • 2. M E M P H R É E N M O U V E M E N T 2 MeM Partners Newsletter , june 2013 Did  you  know  that...? From  daycare  to  school  -‐  only  40%  of  youngsters  are   sufficiently  ac9ve;  -‐  There’s  been  a  50%  drop  in  the   use  of  an  ac9ve  means  of   transport  to  school  in  fewer  than   30  years;  -‐  one  out  of  five  youngsters  walks   or  rides  a  bike  to  school;  -‐  more  than  80%  of  primary  school   children  live  less  than  1,6km  from   their  school;    -‐  according  to  some  60%  of   youngsters,  transportaDon  is  one  of   the  main        -‐  obstacles  to  being  acDve  in  their   free  Dme. Why  is  it  important  to  act? Simply  replacing  a  sedentary   lifestyle  with  a  moderately  acDve   one  can  have  tremendous  health   benefits  for  our  youth.    Thus,  an   acDve  means  of  transport  can  lead   to  a  significant  increase  in  physical   ac9vity  and  can  reach  thousands   of  young  people  who  don’t  take   part  in  any  other  form  of  physical   ac9vity.    This  measure  alone  can   lead  to  a  6%  increase  in  the  number   of  youth  who  get    sufficient  physical   acDvity. Young  people  who  get  to  school  by   way  of  an  acDve  means  of  transport   are  also  more  acDve  on  the  whole   than  those  who  travel  by  car,   because  the  laIer  don’t  make  up   for  these  periods  of  inacDvity  by   being  more  acDve  in  their  free   Dme. Besides  increasing  the  daily  amount   of  physical  acDvity,  an  acDve  means   of  transport  promotes  autonomy   and  socializaDon,  two  factors  that   also  play  a  role  in  academic   success. Many  factors  have  an  influence  on   acDve  transport  habits Several  wards  and  ciDes  are   planned  mainly  with  motor  vehicles   in  mind  (big  boulevards,  wide   streets,  lack  of  sidewalks...).    Some   young  people  don’t  have  access  to   sports  installaDons,  equipment  or   acDviDes,  and  others  live  in  wards   that  don’t  allow  for  an  acDve   means  of  transport.    A  feeling  of   security,  whether  actual  or   perceived,  parents’  fears,  and  the   low  housing  density  of  an  area  can   also  impact  a  child’s  mobility.    So   many  factors  that  require  our  joint   efforts.   A  planning  mouvement  that   favours  an  ac9ve  means  of   transport  seems  to  be  underway.     It  can  be  seen  in  transportaDon   policies,  in  urban  planning  as  well   as  in  public  opinion.    The  changes   that  are  being  made  to  the  Urban   Planning  Law  and  the  upcoming   release  of  a  Quebec  plan  for   sustainable  mobility  should   accelerate  this  trend. How  can  we  change  the  situa9on? Changes  need  to  be  made  to  the   seWngs  in  which  young  people   spend  most  of  their  Dme  in  order  to   support  them  in  their  decision  to   adopt  an  acDve  means  of   transportaDon. It’s happening right here! Everything is fine in a perfect world, the sun is shining and the birds chirping.... It’s happening right here! Everything is fine in a perfect world, the sun is shining and the birds chirping....
  • 3. M E M P H R É E N M O U V E M E N T MeM Partners Newsletter , june 2013 3 In  the  community A  phycically  acDve  lifestyle  is  a  way   of  life  in  which  physical  acDvity,  in   all  its  forms,  is  valued  and  part  of   daily  life.    A  person’s  physically   acDve  lifestyle  can  include  physical   acDviDes  that  are  athleDc,   recreaDonal,  uDlitarian  or  a  means   of  transportaDon. Over  the  past  few  decades,  societal   changes  have  had  a  tremendous   impact  on  our  way  of  life.    The   technological  boom,  urbanizaDon,   the  transformaDon  of  the   tradiDonal  family  and  work,   changes  from  an  acDve  means  of   transport  (walking,  biking)  to   motorized  transport  (car,  moped),   and  the  sedentary  nature  of  many   types  of  acDviDes  have  contributed   to  a  reducDon  in  physical  acDvity   among  our  youth. Why  is  it  important  to  act? Because  physical  ac9vity  is   essen9al  to  the  development  of   young  people Because  the  current  environment   does  not  promote  a  physically   ac9ve  lifestyle   Many  factors  affect  young  people’s   involvement  in  physical  acDviDes Urban  planning,  shared  use  of   equipment  and  installaDons,   security  and  accessibility  are  issues   that  affect  many  communiDes.     Also,  young  people  require   structure  and  suitable  condiDons  in   order  for  them  to  have  a  posiDve   experience.    If  it’s  posiDve,  there’s  a   greater  chance  they’ll  want  to   repeat  it.             How  can  we  change  the  situaDon?   Changes  need  to  be  made  to  the   seWngs  in  which  young  people   spend  most  of  their  Dme  in  order  to   help  them  adopt  and,  most   importantly,  maintain  a  physically   acDve  lifestyle. The  recipes  are  a  result  of  the  collaboraDon  between  the  community  kitchen  staff  and  the  nutriDonist  from  the  CSSS  and  have   some  very  interesDng  features:          -‐  They  all  meet  school  norms  in  terms  of  healthy  eaDng          -‐  They’re  very  easy  for  children  to  make          -‐  They  can  be  made  in  under  30  minutes  (some  take  only  10  minutes!)          -‐  Most  of  them  require  very  liIle  equipment  and  can  even  be  made  at  the  park! So  what  are  you  waiDng  for?!    Get  your  copy  of  the  booklet  from  the  community  kitchen.    You’ll  help  support  this  summer’s   acDviDes  or  even  those  planned  for  daycare  this  fall!
