MediaMosa, yet another videoplatform
1. MediaMosa, yet another video platform?from end user application to platform service Marc Pluijmaekers – Technical Product Manager Video november 2010
2. A little bit of history… Once upon a time… the Kennisnet Video Portaal (KVP) portal where schools could store their audio-visual content in one big container/collection However…some years later… Video sharing sites like YouTube seemed qualified to fulfill the needs of individuals or even individual schools Besides: the quality and capacity of YouTube grew faster than we could innovate YouTube has far more means to create new functionality Kennisnet may not disrupt the competitive market with supply and demand MediaMosa, yet another video platform?
3. Why choosing a platform service Collection providers want to offer their content to their targeted educational sector under their own label Kennisnet’s mission is to support schools and educational facilities with independent services regarding the effective and safe use of ICT, thus improving the quality of teaching and learning. ERGO: A platform service instead of an end user application, targeting collection providers and (large) educational organizations No investments in streaming servers, storage, transcoding, etc. needed, collection providers can solely focus on presentation 2 MediaMosa, yet another video platform?
4. Make or buy: why invest in ‘yet another video platform’? The market is catching on, but a number of key features is lacking: Authorization and authentication (user)access to collections requires careful organization Metadata finding content is essential Collection management guarantees for quality, format, availability, service (contract) duration ERGO: “MAKE”: Let’s BUILD that video platform service ourselves !!! 3 MediaMosa, yet another videoplatform?
5. So then came… 2007 >> start project VP-X: development of a video platform in cooperation with SURFnet and Madcap 2008 >> going live with an operational video platform service: VP-Core 2009 >> open sourcing of the VP-Core code: MediaMosa 2010 >> developing new VP-Core / MediaMosa functionality three releases in 2010 continuation of the operational service to collection providers connected to VP-Core community development MediaMosa, yet another video platform?
6. Video platform as a building block for end user applications VP-Core is a building block for end user applications and offers a number of key features: storage streaming transcoding authorization and authentication metadata management MediaMosa is software to build a Full Featured, Webservice Oriented Media Management and Distribution platform. 5 MediaMosa, yet another video platform?
7. Video services by Kennisnet Target customers: collection providers, large educational organizations and schools Proposition: Kennisnet delivers the platform en customers build their own end user application There is a white label end user application (WLE) available for customers to use as a starting point for their own end user application Collection providers have been successfully connected: S-TV and E-TV, who have built their own end user application Connecting individual schools was not successful: installing the WLE was (still) too complicated for them… 6 MediaMosa, yet another video platform?
8. Future plans Further development of MediaMosa and taking new functionality into production on our operational VP-Core platform Continue video platform services to current customers, connect new customers MediaMosa community development 7 MediaMosa, yetanother video platform?
