What is Virtual Reality or VR?
Computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional image or
environment that can be interacted with in a seemingly real or physical
way by a person using special electronic equipment, such as a helmet
with a screen inside or gloves fitted with sensors.
Virtual Reality means feeling an imaginary (virtual) world, rather than
the real one.The imaginary world is a simulation running in a computer.
The sense data is fed by some system to our brain.
Virtual Reality allows a user to interact with a computer- simulated
environment, be it a real or imagined one.
History of Virtual Reality
In 1950s, Flight simulators were built by the US Air Force to train
student pilots.
Visionary cinematographer Morton Heilig built a single user console
called Sensorama. This enabled the user watch television in three
dimensional ways.
Simulation that contained Stereoscopic images, motion chair, audio,
temperature changes, odours, and blown air.
Why Virtual Reality is needed?
• Operations in dangerous environments
There are still many examples of people working in dangerous or
hardship environments that could benefit from the use ofVR-mediated
teleportation.
Workers in radioactive, space, or toxic environments could be relocated
to the safety of aVR environment where they could 'handle' any
hazardous materials without any real danger using teleoperation or
telepresence .
Why Virtual Reality is needed?
ScientificVisualization
ScientificVisualization provides the
researcher with immediate
graphical feedback during the
course of the computations and
gives him/her the ability to 'steer'
the solution process.
Why Virtual Reality is needed?
Application at NASA Ames Research Center is theVirtual Planetary
Exploration. It helps planetary geologists to remotely analyze the
surface of a planet. They useVR techniques to roam planetary
terrains.
Why Virtual Reality is needed?
Medicine
Until now experimental research
and education in medicine was
mainly based on dissection and
study of plastic models.
Computerized 3D human models
provide a new approach to
research and education in
medicine. Experimenting
medical research with virtual
patients will be a reality.
Why Virtual Reality is needed?
We will be able to create not
only realistic looking virtual
patients, but also histological
and bone structures.With the
simulation of the entire
physiology of the human
body,
Types of Virtual Reality
VR Systems can be divided into three groups
non-immersive systems (like workstations) See information about
the real world, presented via computer - location based services,
GIS .
hybrid systems (graphics on top of real world) also called:
Augmented reality systems Stay in real world, but see simulated
objects
immersive systems (like HMD or CAVE ) See simulated world and
"be" in that simulated world.
Devices used in Virtual Reality
 HEAD MOUNTED DISPLAY (HMD)
 CAVE AUTOMATIC VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENT (CAVE)
 DATA GLOVES
 DATA SUIT
Applications of Virtual Reality
Business:
• Virtual reality is being used in a number of ways by the business
community which include:
• Virtual tours of a business environment.
• Training of new employees.
• A 360 view of a product.
Conclusion
Virtual Reality is a growing industry.
 PC and specialized hardware are getting better, faster and cheaper
because of development inVR.
 In the past, computing power has doubled approximately every 18
months. If this is the case then we should have a computer powerful
enough to run immersiveVR programs in our own homes by the year
2037.
ThankYou!
