Requirements on continuous ink jet (CIJ) nozzles
Continuous Ink Jet (CIJ) nozzle orifices are mostly made out of synthetic sapphire or
ruby jewels. Some CIJ printer manufacturers use stainless steel micro electro-discharged
(Micro EDM) drilled stainless steel foils to make nozzle orifices instead of using jewels.
Both type of nozzle orifices have advantages and disadvantages.
1. Nozzles made out of jewels are extremely hard, robust, durable and cannot get
damaged during use no matter how these are handled. They are chemically
inert. They do not get scratched, erode or corrode during use. Their shape and
surface finish remains unchanged during use. They have extremely long life
2. Micro EDM nozzles are consistent. One nozzle is practically the same as another.
Therefore, jet direction is the same from one nozzle to another. As a result, micro
EDM nozzles do not usually require the provision of a jet alignment mechanism
in the printhead. Micro EDM nozzles are mostly, if not exclusively, made in-house
by the ink jet OEM.

Is there a difference between sapphire (white) and
Ruby (red) ink jet nozzles regarding overall ink jet
performance? The answer is no. Absolutely not.
What is important in both of these type of nozzles is
the quality of the jewel material, the design, shape,
geometry and surface finish of the jewel.
