Matthew Bohrer has found his purpose and happiness in working with children and educators over almost 29 years in public education. As the new principal of Lincoln-Douglas Elementary School, he has seen teachers implementing new strategies and working closely with students, and students excited to learn. While he does not claim to have found the secret to happiness, Bohrer finds working with students and staff at Lincoln-Douglas fulfilling and is looking forward to continuing in this role. He invites visitors to see the good things happening at the school.

Matthew Bohrer, LincolnDouglas Principal, Finds Purpose in
Working with Children and Educators
There are many who will tell you that they
know the secret to finding happiness in life.
Some believe it is earning lots of money.
Others say it is having the most friends on
Facebook. At this moment, you might be
saying, “Oh no. Is he going to say that he
knows the answer?” In short, no. I don’t
have the secret to happiness, but I can tell
you where I have found happiness, and
what it means to me in my life.
It is difficult to write such a statement
without lifting up my family. Noelle, my
bride of almost 22 years, is my rock. She
provides me with a sounding board, a
smile, and so much more. I can safely write
that my happiness is greatly affected by
being with her. Our three boys, Nathaniel,
Zachary, and Josh, while they are typical
boys, provide a contentment and happiness
that I cannot overlook. In addition to my
family, my church offers a community and a
space that helps me with my overall
happiness. Going to school and working
toward a doctoral degree offers a challenge that also helps me remain focused and happy. So,
I must be a generally happy person. I am, but I find that there is one more thing that I require
that greatly affects my happiness.
Again, I don’t have any secrets, and I am not saying that what offers me happiness will do the
same for everyone, but my need to have a purpose in life is critically important. This purpose
comes from working with children and educators for almost 29 years. It is hard for me to
In partnership with students, family, and
community, we educate every student for
the challenges of today and the
opportunities of tomorrow through the
continuous pursuit of excellence.

comes from working with children and educators for almost 29 years. It is hard for me to
believe, but I have been working in public education for that long, and I am still excited to have
the opportunity to continue this journey at LincolnDouglas Elementary School.
I have been the principal for the LincolnDouglas community since July. Our teachers and
students arrived toward the end of August, and our school has been busy serving our students
since that time. However, in that short time, I have seen teachers trying new teaching
strategies, working closely with students on reading and writing skills, and more. I have seen
students alive with the youthfulness of life, and a desire to become all they dream of being.
And, I have had the opportunity to work with an administrative staff that is forward thinking,
visionary, and dedicated to the improvement of all we stand for. Overall, I am very impressed
with the Freeport School District, and am excitedly looking forward to being an active part of
the schools and communities for many years to come.
I invite you to come and visit LincolnDouglas any time and take in the good things that are
happening there. Give me a call, stop by to talk, or send me an email. My door is always open
to having rich conversations and meaningful dialogue about how we can better serve our
students as they step forward on their journeys. Good things are happening at LincolnDouglas
Elementary School.
