Tips to Make Your Business
Greener and More Secure
Most businesses today recycle their paper documents
as part of their commitment to sustainable practices.
But if you’re not recycling paper securely, your good
intentions could lead to a security breach.
By partnering with Shred-it for secure document
destruction, we can make sure that every piece of
paper you discard stays safe — from the time it
leaves your hands to the moment it’s shredded
and then recycled.
Go green!
Every ton of recycled paper can save:
• 17 trees, which will absorb 250 lbs.
of carbon dioxide each year
• 380 gallons of oil
• 4,000 kilowatts of energy
• 3 cubic yards of landfill space
• 7,000 gallons of water
Per ton, that equals a 65% energy savings,
58% in water savings and 60 lbs. less air pollution.2
3 Simple Ways to Be
More Green at Work
These tips can save the earth and save your
company money too:
1. Watt’s up: You would never leave home with all
the lights on, computers and printers running, so
why is it OK to do this at the office? Using a power
strip for devices like computers, lights and printers
makes it easy to shut down an entire desktop
at once.
2. Light for less: Artificial lighting accounts for 44%
of the electrical use in office buildings. As your
current light bulbs burn out, replace them with
Energy Star-rated light bulbs and fixtures, which
use at least 2/3 less energy than regular lighting.1
3. Smarter heating: Create an after hours and
weekend thermostat setting. If you know your
employees aren’t going to be in the office, use a
lower setting that conserves more energy during
these hours. Be sure to allow an override function
so that it can be changed if someone decides to
come in to work.

Tips to Make Your Business
Greener and More Secure
Shred-it’s commitment goes beyond
secure document destruction.
A greener fleet. Our trucks are designed
for lower emissions and fuel consumption.
All motors meet or exceed North American
emissions standards.
An eye on the future. We’re developing smaller,
more fuel-efficient trucks and auto-shutdown
technology to further reduce emissions. Friendlier
fuels. They’re reclaimable, recyclable, non-toxic,
non-carcinogenic, low-odor, free of heavy metals
and 20-60% biodegradable within 28 days.
Reused wood. We walk the talk! Even the secure
consoles that hold your paper prior to shredding
are built with 100% recycled wood particleboard.
Being green (and secure) is good for business.
Make secure document destruction with
Shred-it part of your company’s sustainability
program today!

3 More Ways to Be Greener.
Save yourself some money when you practice these
eco-friendly tips:
1. Be a creative commuter: If you live within 5 miles
of your office, you may be able to ride your bike to
work. For those with a longer commute, investigate
sources of public transportation or carpool with a
co-worker/neighbor.
2. Use recyclable shopping bags: If every household
in the U.S. reused a paper grocery bag for one shopping
trip, about 60,000 trees would be saved.3
3. Recycle your e-waste: Stop your old mobile phone
or printer cartridges going to landfill by contacting
Oxfam, ActionAid or Rainforest Concern, which will
recycle and re-sell them. Remember that computer
hard drives and other data-sensitive eMedia need to
be securely destroyed before recycling. For more
