What Is A Technocultre
1. “Technocultures are subcultures distinguished by their
technologies and their attitudes to technology”
(Irwin &More:1995:p150)
2. Question for YOU
Do you think technology has become a
benefit or an interference with people?
3. Reading
McCarthy, John & Wright, Peter (2004)
‘Living with Technology’
Written in 2004.
5 years later still relevant.
WHY?
HCI (Human Computer Interaction)
is still under-researched
4. Proposals of McCarthy and Wright
Aimed to elucidate the nature of HCI and the role of both
human and technology by examining :
1) The Emotional Quality of HCI
2) Social Practices associated with HCI
3) Difficulty in Accounting for the Human experience
4) Adapting a Pragmatic approach to HCI
5) Understanding about the creative quality of human
experience in HCI
6) Understanding the significance of Pragmatism in HCI
“Interaction with technology is now about what people feel as
it about what people do” (McCarthy & Wright:2004:p.9)
5. The emotional quality of HCI
Technology draws an emotion that is felt by the user
but it’s the experience that the user feels that is vital
“A sense of something not yet understood leaves us
feeling disrupted but also alive, attentive and curious”
(McCarthy et al:2005:p.144)
7. Social Practices associated with HCI
Every technology is associated with one or several
human actions.
“Ties between humans, their bodies and their
surroundings are transformed by various technologies”
(Aas:2006:p.144)
9. Difficulty in accounting for the
Human experience
How come we are so absorbed with technology?
We can deconstruct how a piece of technology works
(ie. Graphics, Design, Interface) to draws user
attention but it is difficult how and why this user
attention occurs from the user
“People may not be able to determine exactly what
kind of interaction they are involved in”
(Dean:2001:p.18)
10. Adapting a Pragmatic approach
In examining HCI (Human Computer Interaction),
Pragmatism aims to analyze How and Why people are
drawn to technology and how to improve it
“The growing demand for technological verification of
identity is a result of the intricate connection between
notions of self, order, efficiency and security”
(Aas:2006:p.156)
12. Understanding about the creative
quality of human experience in HCI
How the user experiences technology is largely
determined what tools and capabilities the technology
has to offer
CREATIVE FREEDOM
“User experience is now becoming central to our
understanding of the technology”
(McCarthy:2004:p.42)
14. Significance of Pragmatism
In understanding HCI, we need to examine technology
from different points of view.
Why?
1)The experience of technology varies from person to
person
2) Technology is dynamic
“Communication in international technology is now too
important and too complex to be left to chance” (Irwin &
More: 1995:p.149-150)
16. How is Technocultures reflective of human
interaction with technology?
Its difficult to say
Multiple issues arise from how we examine the HCI
and difficult to explain the subjective experience
IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU!
