Stating Purpose
●These structures express purpose and answer the question why something is done.
They are going to Scotland in order to see their relatives, and they have left early
so as to be there on time to listen to their uncle playing the bagpipes at the concert.
We are travelling
to Scotland to
visit our relatives.
NOTE:
→ 'in order to' and 'so as to' are more common before stative verbs like: be, see, have, know, appear, seem, understand, etc.
→ Before a negative infinitive, we normally use 'so as not' or 'in order not to” e.g.: I am leaving now so as not to be late.
(not: I am leaving now to be not late).
→ Remember: Do not use 'for' before the infinitive of purpose: I called you to invite you to the party ( NOT “for inviting”)

They are going to Scotland in order to see their relatives, and they have left early so as to be there on time to listen to their uncle playing the bagpipes at the concert. We are travelling to Scotland to visit our relatives. NOTE: → 'in order to' and 'so as to' are more common before stative verbs like: be, see, have, know, appear, seem, understand, etc.
